Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS AT AN IN-DEPTH STUDY OF THE GERMAN LANGUAGE, IN PARTICULAR OF COMPLEX GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURES, AND IS ORIENTED TOWARDS PERFECTING THE PRODUCTION OF WRITTEN AND ORAL COMMUNICATION FORMS OF VARIOUS KINDS IN DIFFERENT CONTEXTS. AMPLE SPACE WILL BE GIVEN TO CRITICAL REFLECTION ON SOME SPECIFIC ASPECTS OF CONTEMPORARY GERMAN AND TO THE LINGUISTIC, RHETORICAL AND STYLISTIC ANALYSIS OF VARIOUS TYPES OF WRITTEN AND ORAL TEXTS.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN:
- THE MAIN CURRENT TRENDS IN CONTEMPORARY GERMAN
- THE TECHNIQUES OF PRODUCTION AND COMPREHENSION OF TEXTS OF DIFFERENT TYPOLOGY BY APPLYING THE PRINCIPLES OF LINGUISTIC INVESTIGATION TO DIVERSE COMMUNICATIVE CONTEXTS;
- ADVANCED TEXTUAL ANALYSIS AND TRANSLATION (B2/C1 CEFR LEVEL);
- THE GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURES AND VOCABULARY OF GERMAN AT AN ADVANCED LEVEL (B2/C1 CEFR LEVEL);

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
- USE GERMAN FLEXIBLY IN EVERYDAY AND PROFESSIONAL CONTEXTS (B2/C1 CEFR LEVEL);
- UNDERSTAND A WIDE RANGE OF COMPLEX TEXTS;
- ANALYSE ORAL AND WRITTEN TEXTS OF VARIOUS KINDS AT AN ADVANCED LEVEL FROM A LINGUISTIC, RHETORICAL AND STYLISTIC PERSPECTIVE;
- PRODUCE CLEAR, WELL-STRUCTURED AND ARTICULATE ORAL AND WRITTEN TEXTS OF VARIOUS TYPES, INCLUDING TECHNICAL TEXTS, SHOWING THE ABILITY TO CONTROL DISCOURSE STRUCTURES, CONNECTIVES AND TEXTUAL COHESION MECHANISMS (B2/C1 CEFR LEVEL);
- TRANSLATE TEXTS OF DIFFERENT GENRES FROM GERMAN INTO ITALIAN AND VICE VERSA AT AN ADVANCED LEVEL;
- SUMMARISE INFORMATION FROM A VARIETY OF ORAL AND WRITTEN SOURCES, PRODUCING A COHERENT TEXT;
- RECOGNISE CURRENT TRENDS OF CONTEMPORARY GERMAN IN TEXTS OF VARIOUS KINDS.

AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
- ANALYSE AND PROCESS MANY ASPECTS OF ORAL AND WRITTEN LANGUAGE PRODUCTION BOTH IN LITERARY AND TECHNICAL TEXTS.

COMMUNICATIVE SKILLS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
- COMMUNICATE IN GERMAN AT AN ADVANCED LEVEL EFFECTIVELY AND APPROPRIATELY TO DIFFERENT TYPES OF INTERLOCUTORS (B2/C1 CEFR LEVEL);
- TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE DIFFERENT CULTURAL CONTEXTS AND REGISTERS OF LINGUISTIC COMMUNICATION AND UNDERSTAND AND TRANSLATE LITERARY TEXTS AND DOCUMENTS OF VARYING COMPLEXITY (B2/C1 CEFR LEVEL).
- ADEQUATELY PRESENT THE CULTURAL CONTENT OF VARIOUS DISCIPLINES THROUGH THE USE OF TERMINOLOGY AND REGISTERS APPROPRIATE TO A WIDE RANGE OF COMMUNICATIVE AND EXPRESSIVE SITUATIONS,
- CARRY OUT IN-DEPTH CRITICAL ANALYSES OF THE TOPICS ADDRESSED.

LEARNING SKILLS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
-IDENTIFY AND USE THE TOOLS OF ANALYSIS, IN-DEPTH STUDY AND SCIENTIFIC UPDATING FOR LANGUAGE LEARNING (EXPERT USE OF BIBLIOGRAPHICAL AND MEDIA TOOLS FOR CHECKING AND VERIFYING THE KNOWLEDGE POSSESSED, AND CONTINUOUS SELF-UPDATING);
- ACCESS TO SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE PRODUCED IN GERMAN;
- DEVELOP AN APTITUDE FOR CRITICAL THINKING AND RESEARCH IN THE SPECIFIC AREAS OF COMPETENCE.
Prerequisites
STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE PASSED THE EXAMS OF GERMAN LANGUAGE I, II, AND III IN A THREE-YEAR DEGREE COURSE. STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO POSSESS AN ITALIAN B1 LEVEL OF COMPETENCE ACCORDING TO THE COMMON EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE FOR LANGUAGES.
Contents
THE COURSE EXAMINES THEMES AND TRENDS OF CONTEMPORARY GERMAN LANGUAGE. THE COURSE WILL FOCUS ON THE FOLLOWING TOPICS:
1) STANDARDSPRACHE UND VARIETÄTEN;
2) EINFLÜSSE DES ENGLISCHEN AUF DIE DEUTSCHE SPRACHE;
3) GESPROCHENES DEUTSCH;
4) INTERNETBASIERTE KOMMUNIKATION;
5) SPRACHWANDEL, SPRACHKRITIK UND SPRACHPFLEGE.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES 45 HOURS OF LECTURES AND PRACTICAL LANGUAGE ACTIVITIES WITH NATIVE-SPEAKER LANGUAGE EXPERTS. SELF-STUDY ACTIVITIES IN PRE-ARRANGED LANGUAGE LABS ARE ALSO RECOMMENDED.
Verification of learning
ALL STUDENTS MUST TAKE A FINAL WRITTEN EXAM (TO TEST THEIR THEORY KNOWLEDGE ON THE CONTENT OF THE COURSE AND THEIR LINGUISTIC COMPETENCES) AND A FINAL ORAL EXAM. THE WRITTEN TEST CONSISTS IN 1) A GRAMMAR TEST (ADVANCED LEVEL) AND 2) A COMPOSITION WHICH PROVIDES A CRITICAL REFLECTION ON THE THEORETICAL CONTENTS OF THE COURSE. PASSED THE WRITTEN EXAME, THE ORAL EXAM PROVIDES A CRITICAL DISCUSSION ON THE CONTENTS DEALT WITH IN THE COURSE.
