Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS AT PROVIDING STUDENTS WITH THE HISTORICAL-LITERARY NOTIONS ESSENTIAL TO FACE THE STUDY OF THE AVANT-GARDE MOVEMENTS OF THE 20TH CENTURY AND THE EXPERIMENTS IN THE DIFFERENT LITERARY GENRES (OPERA, PROSE, DRAMA).

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL LEARN TO:
-ANALYZE TO DESCRIBE LITERARY TEXTS IN THE ORIGINAL LANGUAGE (GERMAN)
-SELECT INFORMATION AND DATA FROM THE ORIGINAL LANGUAGE TEXT (GERMAN)
-UNDERSTAND THE LITERARY TEXT IN THE SPECIFICITY OF ITS LANGUAGE AS WELL AS IN ITS HISTORICAL CONTEXT.

APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL DEEPEN THE ABILITY TO:
-ANALYZE AND CRITICALLY DESCRIBE HISTORICAL EVENTS AND LITERARY PRODUCTS, IDENTIFYING THEIR COMPLEX INTERACTIONS
-RECOGNIZE DIFFERENT TYPES OF TEXTS, TO ANALYZE AND DESCRIBE THEIR STRUCTURE AND TO FORMULATE A CRITICAL COMMENT.

AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO ANALYZE, COMPARE AND DISCUSS LITERARY TEXTS.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
-REPORT ON THE HISTORY, CULTURE AND LITERATURE OF THE PERIOD APPROACHED IN THE COURSE
-PRESENT THE ANALYSIS OF A LITERARY TEXT AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO THE HISTORICAL CONTEXT OF REFERENCE.

LEARNING SKILLS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
-USE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHICAL TOOLS.
-UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET LITERARY TEXTS RELATED TO THE PERIOD STUDIED.
Prerequisites
STUDENTS MUST HAVE PASSED THE FOLLOWING EXAMS: GERMAN LITERATURE 2 AND GERMAN LANGUAGE 2.
THE MAIN TECHNIQUES OF TEXT ANALYSIS AS WELL AS THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN TRENDS IN 18TH AND 19TH-CENTURY GERMAN LITERATURE ARE TO BE CONSIDERED AS A CENTRAL PRE-REQUISITE FOR COURSE ATTENDANCE.
Contents
THE COURSE WILL CONSIST OF THE ANALYSIS AND CRITICAL COMMENTARY OF THREE TEXTS BY DIFFERENT AUTHORS FROM THE 1920S.
THE FIRST 3 HOURS WILL BE DEVOTED TO AN INTRODUCTION TO THE LITERARY-HISTORICAL PERIOD.
THE NEXT 9 HOURS WILL BE DEVOTED TO THE ANALYSIS AND CRITICAL DESCRIPTION OF IM WESTEN NICHTS NEUES.
THE NEXT 9 HOURS TO THE ANALYSIS AND CRITICAL DESCRIPTION OF DIE FLUCHT OHNE ENDE.
THE FOLLOWING 9 HOURS WILL BE DEVOTED TO THE ANALYSIS AND CRITICAL DESCRIPTION OF EIN PFUND ORANGEN


Teaching Methods
LECTURES. 2/3 OF THE LECTURES WILL BE HELD IN GERMAN. ATTENDANCE IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. IF THE STUDENT IS UNABLE TO ATTEND AT LEAST 70% OF THE LECTURES, IT IS RECOMMENDED TO REQUEST THE PROFESSOR A PROGRAM FOR NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS.
Verification of learning
ORAL EXAM.
THE ASSESSMENT AIMS TO TEST THE STUDENTS’ CULTURAL BACKGROUND AND THEIR SPECIFIC KNOW-HOW ABOUT ALL THE TEXTS INCLUDED IN THE SYLLABUS. STUDENTS ARE ALSO EXPECTED TO GIVE PERTINENT ANSWERS, TO HAVE FLUENCY BOTH IN ITALIAN AND GERMAN AND TO POSSESS SKILLS OF TEXTS ANALYSIS.
THE EXAM WILL ALSO INCLUDE EXPOSURE IN GERMAN TO TWO OF THE PROPOSED QUESTIONS.
STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO READ ALL THE TEXTS INCLUDED IN THE SYLLABUS IN THE ORIGINAL LANGUAGE.
