Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS AT PROVIDING TO THE STUDENTS OF THE MASTER DEGREE IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING THEORETICAL TOOLS FOCUSING ON VIBRATION PHENOMENA IN MECHANICAL DEVICES, AUTOMOTIVE ENVIRONMENT, INDUSTRIAL PLANTS, AUTOMATIC SYSTEMS. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: THE COURSE CONTENTS COVER VIBRATIONS OF DISCRETE OR LUMPED SYSTEMS WITH INERTIA, FLEXIBILITY AND DAMPING IDENTIFIED AS SEPARATE ENTITIES, AS WELL AS CONTINUOUS SYSTEMS WHERE INERTIA ELEMENT POSSESSES OWN FLEXIBILITY AND DAMPING PROPERTIES. ABOUT THE ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING, THE COURSE WILL DEAL WITH COMMON VIBRATIONAL BEHAVIOUR OF INDUSTRIAL ENVIRONMENT CONCERNING ROTATING MACHINERY, MACHINE TOOLS, RECIPROCATING ENGINES, ETC. AS COMMON ITEMS OF THE DEGREE PROGRAM, STUDIED THROUGH LINEAR MODELING, SMALL OSCILLATIONS, PERIODIC LOADING, AND ARBITRARY EXCITATION.
"MECHANICAL VIBRATIONS" ALSO COVERS LAPLACE'S TRANSFORM AND TRANSFER FUNCTION AS USUAL LANGUAGE OF CONTROL SYSTEMS AREA, FREQUENCY RESPONSE FUNCTION AND ITS CHARACTERISTIC REPRESENTATIONS FOR STEADY-STATE RESPONSE, AND LAGRANGE'S FORMULATION OF THE MOTION EQUATIONS AS WELL.
AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT: THE COURSE "MECHANICAL VIBRATIONS" IS ALSO DESIGNED TO STIMULATE AUTONOMOUS JUDGEMENT SKILL FOR COMPARING ENGINEERING SOLUTIONS IN THE FRAMEWORK OF DESIGN TECHNIQUES THROUGH SOLID AND SHARED CRITERIA EVEN FROM DEPENDABILITY AND COST POINT OF VIEWS.
COMMUNICATIVE SKILLS: ACCORDING TO THE EXAMINATION METHOD EXPLAINED BELOW, STUDENTS ARE ASKED TO ILLUSTRATE A PROBLEM RELATED TO MECHANICAL SYSTEMS UNDER EXTERNAL ACTIONS AND DISCUSS THE MATHEMATICAL MODELLING WITH PROPER ASSUMPTIONS AND LIMITATION OF VALIDITY ABOUT THE PROPOSED SOLUTION.
LEARNING ABILITY: BE ABLE TO APPLY AND UPDATE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE IN DIFFERENT CONTEXTS CHARACTERIZED BY TECHNOLOGICAL PROGRESS.
Prerequisites
COMMON SKILLS OF THE B.SC. DEGREE IN INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING AREA IN THE FOLLOWING FIELDS: RATIONAL MECHANICS, DYNAMICS OF MACHINES, DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS AND LINEAR ALGEBRA.

Teaching Methods
LECTURES ON THE THEORY OF MECHANICAL VIBRATIONS, EXERCISES ABOUT VIBRATING SYSTEMS WITH MANY DEGREES OF FREEDOM UNDER EXTERNAL ACTIONS. SIMULATIONS PROPOSED WITH SOFTWARE USUALLY INVOLVED IN ACADEMIC COURSES TO ANALYSE THE RESULTS FROM GRAPHICAL POINT OF VIRW AS WELL AS TO FORMULATE MATHEMATICAL PROBLEMS WITH HIGHER LEVEL OF COMPLEXITY. LABORATORY APPLICATIONS TO SHOW BASIC TOOLS FOR MODAL TESTING.
ENGLISH TAUGHT COURSE.
Verification of learning
THE ASSESSMENT OF THE STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS IS CARRIED OUT THROUGH AN ORAL TEST LASTING NO MORE THAN ABOUT 30 MINUTES.

THE ASSESSMENT OF THE ORAL TEST ASSIGNS POSITIVE MARK TO: CLARITY OF THE PROPOSED SOLUTION, RIGHTNESS OF MATHEMATICAL MODELLING OF THE ASSIGNED VIBRATING SYSTEM, GENUINE UNDERSTANDING FROM THE PHYSICAL POINT OF VIEW OF ALL THE IMPLICATIONS COMING FROM THE STUDIED VIBRATIONAL PHENOMENA IN AUTOMOTIVE AND INDUSTRIAL ENVIRONMENT.

THE FINAL GRADE, EXPRESSED IN THIRTIETHS WITH EXCELLENCE GRADE AS TOP MARK ("LODE") WILL DEPEND ON THE GLOBAL MATURITY ACQUIRED ON THE CONTENT OF THE COURSE.
THE MINIMUM GRADE (18 OUT OF 30) IS OBTAINED THROUGH A RIGHT MODELLING OF THE VIBRATING SYSTEM PROPOSED AT ORAL TEST AND AN ENOUGH GOOD OVERALL KNOWLEDGE OF THE COURSE TOPICS.
THE GRADE 30 OUT OF 30 IS PROPOSED TO THE STUDENTS WHO SHOW SOUND SOLUTION UNDER QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE POINT OF VIEWS WITH THOROUGH AND DEEP KNOWLEDGE OF THE COURSE TOPICS. TOP MARK - LODE - WILL REWARD STUDENTS WHO WILL ACQUIRE THE SKILL TO FORMULATE SOLUTIONS IN BROADER APPLICATIVE CONTEXTS, EVENTUALLY IN PRESENCE OF UNUSUAL OR NOT EXPLICITLY EXPLAINED PROBLEMS ALONG THE LESSONS.
