Objectives
IT REPRESENTS AN ADVANCED COURSE ABOUT APPLIED PHYSICS TO BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES. IT IS FINALIZED TO PROVIDE THE KNOW-HOW ABOUT THE BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS OF THE EFFECTS OF THE INTERACTION OF BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS WITH IONIZING RADIATIONS, MECHANICAL STRESSES, ACOUSTIC AND ELECTROMAGNETIC VIBRATIONS, FOR DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PURPOSES, TOGETHER WITH THE ASSESSMENT OF THE HEALTH RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH HUMAN EXPOSURE TO POLLUTING PHYSICAL AGENTS LIKE IONIZING RADIATIONS, E.M. FIELDS, AND NOISE.
AT THE END OF THE COURSE, THE STUDENTS WILL GAIN KNOWLEDGE, IN PARTICULAR, ABOUT:
BASICS OF THE INTERACTION BETWEEN IONIZING RADIATIONS AND THE BIOLOGICAL MATTER.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MECHANICAL OSCILLATIONS IN BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS.
PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION OF RELEVANT ADVANCED BIOMEDICAL EQUIPMENTS FOR DIAGNOSTICS AND THERAPY.
THE MAIN ABILITIES (THAT IS CAPACITIES TO APPLY THE GAINED KNOWLEDGE) ACHIEVED BY STUDENTS WILL BE:
•TO BE ABLE TO OPERATE WITH DOSIMETRIC QUANTITIES;
•TO BE ABLE TO APPLY THE THEORETICAL CONCEPTS TO SPECIFIC BIOLOGICAL CASES OF INTEREST;
•TO BE ABLE TO ASSESS ALSO WITH THE HELP OF SIMPLE EXPERIMENTAL SESSIONS THE BIOLOGICAL IMPACT OF THE PHYSICAL PHENOMENA STUDIED DURING THE COURSE.

KNOWLEDGE OF PHYSICS AND MATHEMATICS GAINED DURING THE FIRST LEVEL (LAUREA TRIENNALE) UNIVERSITY PROGRAM.

METHODS AND TECHNIQUES FOR ASSESSING THE ENVIRONMENTAL RADIOACTIVITY AND THE RELATED HEALTH RISK (RAD_CAMPANIA PROJECT)

COMPUTERIZED AXIAL TOMOGRAPHY CAT
NUCLEAR MAGNETIC RESONANCE NMR.

WEEK VII: RECALLS ON THE THEORY OF MECHANICAL WAVES.
EQUATIONS OF MECHANICAL WAVES; POLARIZATION; REFLECTION AND TRANSMISSION;
WEEK VIII: RECALLS ON THE THEORY OF ACOUSTIC WAVES.
EQUATIONS OF ACOUSTIC WAVES; PROPERTY, PITCH; NORMAL MODES
DOPPLER EFFECT.
BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS.
WEEK IX: RECALLS ON THE THEORY OF ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES.
PROPERTIES, WAVE EQUATION; INTERACTION WITH MATTER
WEEK X: DOPPLER LASER VIBROMETRY.
PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION OF A LASER VIBROMETER
WEEK XI
APPLICATION TO THE CARDIO-CIRCULATORY SYSTEM.
WEEK XII
APPLICATION TO THE VOICE AND PHONATION SYSTEM.

THESE TOPICS WILL BE TAUGHT BY MEANS OF THEORETICAL LECTURES, AMOUNTING AT TWO THIRDS OF THE TOTAL NUMBER OF HOURS ACCOMPANIED BY AT LEAST 16 HOURS OF PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES IN THE CLASSROOM WITH STUDENTS ABOUT SPECIFIC PROJECTS REGARDING THE COURSE, PROPOSED BY THE PROFESSORS.
Teaching Methods
THE DEPLOYMENT OF THE COURSE IS ARTICULATED IN FRONT CLASS-ROOM LECTURES (THEORY (32 HOURS) AND PRACTICE/PROJECT ACTIVITIES, AT LEAST 16 HOURS), FOR A TOTAL DURATION OF 48 HOURS (6 CFU), DIVIDED INTO 12 WEEKS, PERFORMED IN THE CLASS-ROOM ALSO WITH THE HELP OF MULTIMEDIA MATERIAL AND LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS.
Verification of learning
AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE LEARNING VERIFICATION IS AIMED AT THE ASSESSMENT THE KNOWLEDGE AND KNOW-HOW GAINED BY THE STUDENTS ABOUT THE CONCEPTS ILLUSTRATED AND THEIR CAPABILITY TO USE SUCH KNOW-HOW TO THE BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS OF INTEREST.
SUCH VERIFICATION WILL BE PERFORMED WITH
•MIDTERM EXAM
•AN ORAL EXAM.
•PROJECT ACTIVITY
DURING THE EXAM THE GAINED KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS ILLUSTRATED DURING THE COURSE, THE SKILLS CONSISTING IN:
GRASP OF THE ISSUES, CORRECT AND PROPER USE OF THE SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE, ABILITY TO ANALYSE, COMMUNICATE AND DRAW CONCLUSIONS WILL BE EVALUATED .
THE FINAL EVALUATION IS EXPRESSED IN THIRTY. AN EVALUATION OF MAGNA CUM LAUDE CAN BE GIVEN TO CANDIDATES SHOWING EXCELLENT ANALYTICAL ABILITIES.
