DIE NEUE FRAU: WOMEN'S LITERATURE IN THE WEIMAR REPUBLIC (1919-1933)
FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY, THE TRADITIONAL DEFINITIONS OF THE ROLES OF WOMEN AND MEN ARE QUESTIONED: THE MYTH OF THE NEUE FRAU IS BORN, WITH SHORT HAIR, PANTS AND BEHIND THE WHEEL OF A CAR. THE WOMAN IS NO LONGER RELEGATED TO THE HOME AND WANTS TO ENTER THE SOCIAL SPACES RESERVED FOR MEN: SPORTS, WORK, CULTURE. FROM THE TWENTIES OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY ONWARDS, A FEMALE LITERATURE DEVELOPED, CLAIMING A DIFFERENT, AUTONOMOUS AND FREE ROLE FOR WOMEN IN MODERN SOCIETY AND REDEFINING SEXUAL IDENTITY. YOUNG WOMEN WRITERS SUCH AS VICKI BAUM, GABRIELE TERGIT, IRMGARD KEUN, MARIELUISE FLEISSER, MASCHA KALÉKO AND MANY OTHERS CONQUERED A CONSIDERABLE SPACE IN THE GIORNALISM OF THE YEARS BETWEEN THE TWO WORLD WARS AND BECAME AUTHORS OF BESTSELLING BOOKS.
AFTER AN EXTENSIVE INTRODUCTION TO THE POLITICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXT OF THE WEIMAR REPUBLIC, THE COURSE WILL ANALYZE A SELECTION OF NOVELS BY THESE AUTHORS AND POEMS BY KALÉKO.
Teaching Methods
