The student will acquire the knowledge of the characteristics of civil and industrial waters, treatment of solids, liquids and gases from process industries, particularly food industry, the recovery and valorization techniques of wastes, the limiting of pollutant emissions. Knowledge and understanding: Definition of ecosystems, environment and pollution. Main regulations. Characterization of pollutants in industrial and food wastewater. Definition of pollution parameters, reciprocal relationships and sampling Mechanical, chemical, biological and tertiary treatments of liquid effluents. Innovative treatment technologies. Disinfection and purification of waste water treatment by integrated and advanced oxidation. Management of water resources in industrial processes. Recovery of high value components and other substances of interest from wastewaters. Case studies in food processes. Applying knowledge and understanding – engineering analysis: Being able to identify the most appropriate methods to define a process for the removal of pollutants in an effluent. Applying knowledge and understanding – engineering design: Ability to identify the key parameters in the definition and carrying out of waste water treatment processes. Making judgments - engineering practice: Ability to identify the most appropriate methods to define the fundamental stages of a process for the removal of pollutants in a wastewater deriving from industrial production, in particular food production. Transversal skills - communication skills –: Ability to present a topic related to the treatment of effluents Learning skills – transversal skills: Ability to apply knowledge in different situations than those presented in the course. |
Prerequisites | |
---|---|
PREREQUISITES FOR THE SUCCESSFUL ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES ARE KINETICS, CHEMICAL REACTORS, PLANT ENGINEERING, PROCESS CONTROL, INDUSTRIAL CHEMISTRY AND CATALYSIS. |
Contents | |
---|---|
COURSE INTRODUCTION (2 H THEORY) ECOSYSTEMS, ENVIRONMENT, POLLUTION FROM INDUSTRIAL AND CIVIL SOURCES, REGULATORY ASPECTS (5 H THEORY) DEFINITION OF POLLUTION PARAMETERS, RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THEM, SAMPLING OF EMISSIONS (15 H THEORY, 3H LAB) LIQUID EFFLUENT CONVENTIONAL TREATMENTS: INTRODUCTION(2 H THEORY), MECHANICAL(2 H THEORY), CHEMICAL(3 H THEORY, 3H EXERCISES), BIOLOGICAL TREATMENTS(6 H THEORY, 3H EXERCISES). INNOVATIVE TREATMENT TECHNOLOGIES: MBR (2 H THEORY) DISINFECTION AND PURIFICATION OF WASTE WATER TREATMENT BY INTEGRATED AND ADVANCED OXIDATION (2 H THEORY, 3H LAB) CHARACTERIZATION OF POLLUTANTS IN INDUSTRIAL AND FOOD WASTEWATER (1 H THEORY) CASE STUDIES: EFFLUENT TREATMENT FROM THE CANNING INDUSTRY, FROM DAIRY INDUSTRY (1 H THEORY, 3H EXERCISES). |
Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
TEACHING METHODS: THE COURSE INCLUDES LECTURES (45H), CLASSROOM EXERCISES (9H) AND PRACTICAL LABORATORY AND/OR IN FIELD VISITS (6H). THE EXERCISES IN THE CLASSROOM INCLUDE THE RESOLUTION OF NUMERICAL EXERCISES. THE LABORATORY EXERCISES INVOLVE THE ANALYTICAL METHODS FOR THE DETERMINATION OF POLLUTANT PARAMETERS. IN FIELD VISITS ON THE STUDENTS EXAMINE ISSUES RELATED TO TECHNOLOGY AND THE MANAGEMENT OF THE TREATMENT OF EFFLUENTS. THE LESSONS ARE GIVEN BY PRESENCE. ATTENDANCE AT THE LECTURES IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
THE ASSESSMENT OF THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE SET OBJECTIVES WILL BE THROUGH THE CONDUCTING A WRITTEN PROJECT ON THE TREATMENT OF SPECIFIC WASTEWATER, ALSO WITH CALCULATIONS ON THE BASIS OF THE NUMERICAL EXERCISES DEVELOPED DURING THE COURSE, AND ITS PRESENTATION DURING THE ORAL EXAMINATION. THE ORAL EXAMINATION HAS AVERAGE DURATION OF ABOUT THIRTY MINUTES (IN CASE OF CORRECT EXPOSURE), BUT IT EXTENDS TO ONE HOUR IN THE PRESENCE OF HESITATIONS. ASSESSMENT DEPENDS ON KNOWLEDGE AND MASTERY DEMONSTRATION OF THE TEACHING TOPICS AND METHODOLOGICAL TOOLS DESCRIBED DURING. EVALUATION CRITERIA FOR THE MINIMUM THRESHOLD: KNOWLEDGE OF THE GENERAL CRITERIA FOR THE REALIZATION OF LIQUID WASTE TREATMENT PROCESSES. EVALUATION CRITERIA FOR EXCELLENCE: KNOWLEDGE AND MASTERY OF WASTE TREATMENT SYSTEMS, WITH EXCELLENT ABILITY TO EXPRESS THE ILLUSTRATED METHODOLOGIES. KNOWLEDGE AND MASTERY OF PURIFICATION SYSTEMS OF POLLUTED CURRENTS FROM FOOD INDUSTRIES. |
