Objectives
MODULE 1:

TO HELP STUDENTS TO IMPROVE THEIR LANGUAGE SKILLS IN ENGLISH DEVELOPING ADVANCED LINGUISTIC AND COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE (LEVEL B2 OF THE EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE FOR LANGUAGES DESIGNED BY THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE).
TO OFFER STUDENTS THE TOOLS TO APPLY LINGUISTIC STRATEGIES TO PRAGMATIC, SOCIOLINGUISTIC AND DISCOURSE ANALYSIS ON SPECIALIZED TEXTS, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO POLITICAL DISCOURSE AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND AND USE SELF-CONFIDENTLY SPECIALIZED LANGUAGES RELATED TO THE SOCIAL SCIENCES.

2. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND, ANALYZE CRITICALLY AND PRODUCE SPECIALIZED TEXTS ON ENGLISH LANGUAGE, ENGLISH LINGUISTICS AND SPECIALIZED ENGLISH LANGUAGES.


MODULE 2:

TO HELP LEARNERS TO IMPROVE THEIR LANGUAGE SKILLS IN ENGLISH DEVELOPING EFFECTIVENESS LINGUISTIC AND COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE (LEVEL B2/C1 OF THE EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE FOR LANGUAGES DESIGNED BY THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE).
TO OFFER STUDENTS THE TOOLS TO APPLY LINGUISTIC STRATEGIES TO PRAGMATIC, SOCIOLINGUISTIC AND DISCOURSE ANALYSIS ON SPECIALIZED TEXTS, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO SOCIO-POLITICAL SCIENCE, INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND POLITICAL SATIRE.

1. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND AND USE SELF-CONFIDENTLY SPECIALIZED LANGUAGES RELATED TO THE SOCIAL SCIENCES.

2. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY THE METHODS OF LINGUISTIC AND MULTIMODAL INVESTIGATION TO REAL TEXTS OF VARIOUS TYPES.

Prerequisites
GOOD BASIC LINGUISTIC COMPETENCES ARE ADVISABLE.
MODULE 1 IS INTRODUCTORY TO MODULE 2.
Contents
MODULE 1:

THE SYLLABUS WILL INCLUDE THOROUGH EXAMINATION OF CURRENT ISSUES RELATED TO THE POST-GRADUATE DEGREE, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO POLITICAL DISCOURSE, MEDIA DISCOURSE AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS. IN PARTICULAR, THE FOCUS WILL BE ON RHETORICAL DISCOURSE, PERSUASIVE METHODS AND ARGUMENTATION (20 H LESSON), THE USE OF METAPHOR, IRONY AND SATIRE AS A POLITICAL TOOL (10 H LESSON). AN ANALYSIS OF CASE STUDIES IN A DIACHRONIC PERSPECTIVE WILL FOLLOW (12 H SEMINAR).

MODULE 2:

IN CONTINUITY WITH THE FIRST MODULE, THE SYLLABUS WILL INCLUDE BOTH THOROUGH AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES ON SELECTED ISSUES (20H LESSON) AS WELL AS ACTIVITIES OF WRITING AND ORAL PRESENTATION FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES (10H).
INTERDISCIPLINARY SEMINARS AND WORKSHOPS WILL BE OFFERED (12 H).

FOR BOTH THE MODULES THE STUDENT HAS TO PREPARE A RESEARCH WORK (WRITTEN DISSERTATION OR POWERPOINT) ON ONE OR MORE COURSE TOPICS AND TO DISCUSS IT ORALLY.
