Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF MOLECULAR QUANTUM MECHANICS THAT ARE USEFUL TO UNDERSTAND THE FORMATION MECHANISMS, THE STRUCTURE AND THE SYMMETRY PROPERTIES OF A SIMPLE MOLECULE, AS WELL AS THE LINK WITH THE INFRARED ABSORPTION (OR EMISSION) SPECTRUM.
FURTHERMORE, AN OVERVIEW OF HIGH RESOLUTION EXPERIMENTAL METHODS OF MOLECULAR SPECTROSCOPY WILL BE GIVEN.
AT THE END OF THE COURSE, STUDENTS WILL UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANTE OF MOLECULAR PHYSICS FOR EARTH AND PLANETARY ATMOSPHERIC STUDIES. THEY WILL ALSO ACQUIRE THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF ADVANCED SPECTROSCOPIC METHODS BASED UPON COHERENT SOURCES OF ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION.
Prerequisites
BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF CLASSICAL PHYSICS, AND GOOD PRACTICE WITH ANALYSIS AND CALCULUS TOOLS. A GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF QUANTUM MECHANICS AND ATOMIC PHYSICS IS ALSO REQUIRED. BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF DETECTION SYSTEMS FOR ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION.
