Objectives | |

Expected learning outcomes and competence to acquire: This teaching unit aims to provide students with a foundational understanding of Earth science, essential for understanding the physical context when planning, programming, and designing engineering works at both site-specific and regional scales. Knowledge and understanding: Students will acquire knowledge of essential terminology and techniques used in geology, geophysics, and geomorphology. They will also develop the ability to identify and characterize soil and bedrock materials (minerals, rocks, and sediments), understand their distribution and arrangement, and utilize reports, maps, and field tools, as demonstrated through practical field exercises. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: Students will learn to refine underground geological models through borehole analysis and surveys. They will also gain the ability to interpret landscapes using geological and geomorphological maps and imagery, applying their understanding of geomorphic processes, materials, and landforms within real-world physical contexts. Autonomy of judgment: Students will be able to effectively understand geological information using a variety of methods, including text, graphics, and maps. They will learn to create topographic profiles and geological cross-sections from terrestrial surveys, connecting these elements to geological and climatic controls, and identifying the dominant geomorphic processes (tectonic, volcanic, erosional, gravitational, and depositional). Communication skills: Students will develop teamwork skills to collaboratively produce shared graphics, maps, and illustrative notes. They will also gain the ability to present geological and geomorphological topics orally, focusing on engineering applications. |

Contents | |

Building upon the educational objectives, this course unit explores fundamental concepts in Earth Sciences, including the Earth's internal systems, geological time, and the dynamics of plate tectonics. Students will also learn about the constituents of the Earth's crust, focusing on minerals and rocks. The course will delve into stratigraphic geology, covering its principles, taxonomy, and terminology, as well as the construction and interpretation of stratigraphic columns and correlations. Practical skills will be developed through laboratory sessions involving the reading and analysis of topographical, geological, and geomorphological maps, including the drafting of topographic and morphological profiles and stratigraphic cross-sections. |
Teaching Methods | |

This unit combines theoretical instruction with practical application. Students will attend frontal lessons and participate in laboratory sessions dedicated to map reading and the creation of topographical profiles and geological cross-sections. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
Student achievement of the learning objectives will be assessed through an oral examination, graded out of thirty (trentesimi). The exam will evaluate the student's understanding of fundamental concepts and their ability to apply this knowledge to images, topographic maps, and geological maps. Students will be expected to demonstrate the practical application of acquired skills to real-world scenarios. The highest honors will be awarded to students who can independently analyze diverse case studies and formulate effective solutions. |
