THE IECLO

THE INTERNATIONAL & EUROPEAN CRIMINAL LAW OBSERVATORY
ON CULTURAL ISSUES, HUMAN RIGHTS, AND SECURITY

ABOUT

The International and European Criminal Law Observatory on Cultural Issues, Human Rights, and Security (IECLO-CUHRSE) is a legal and multidisciplinary network based at the Department of Legal Sciences (DSG) of the University of Salerno (UNISA), Italy.

The Observatory aims to enhance the resources, skills, and expertise of DSG and UNISA through developing scientific collaboration networks with scholars, practitioners, and institutions active in the fields of criminal law and criminal justice at the international, European, and national level to promote the fight against impunity for crimes of global concern.

Operating in a multidisciplinary perspective, the IECLO focuses on three main challenges concerning the commission and repression of core international crimes, transboundary crimes, and transnational organized crimes:

  1. Cultural issues (the impact of crimes on cultural and natural heritage, cultural rights, cultural goods)

  1. Human rights (the impact of crimes on the enjoyment of human rights, and the human rights- based approach to balancing criminal justice regimes with individual guarantees)

  1. Security (the “crucial role” of criminal justice and fighting against impunity in restoring and maintaining international peace and security)

To this end, the Observatory adopts both an integrated (combining research initiatives, teaching/training projects, and community engagement) and a future-oriented approach (anticipating solutions rather than problems, using law and jurisprudence to achieve the goal of ending the culture of impunity for international crimes).
