THE COURSE AIMS AT THE STUDENT'S ACQUISITION OF TRANSVERSAL KNOWLEDGE ON THE MAIN THEORIES - AND RESEARCH METHODOLOGIES - DEVELOPED IN THE SOCIOLOGICAL FIELD TO EXPLAIN THE CHARACTERISTICS AND LINES OF EVOLUTION OF DIGITAL SOCIETIES. THE PERVASIVE AND INNOVATIVE DIMENSION OF DIGITAL COMMUNICATION - LINKED ABOVE ALL TO THE GLOBAL SPREAD OF NEW MEDIA - HAS IN FACT RADICALLY CHANGED THE DYNAMICS OF FUNCTIONING AND REPRODUCTION OF CONTEMPORARY SOCIETIES, CALLING INTO QUESTION - AND QUESTIONING - INTERPRETATIVE PERSPECTIVES AND ESTABLISHED TRADITIONS OF THOUGHT. THE ATTENTION PAID TO DIGITAL MEDIA, INTENDED AS SOCIO-TECHNICAL DEVICES AND SPACE/TIME DISENGAGEMENT TOOLS WILL HIGHLIGHT THEIR SOCIO-ANTHROPOLOGICAL DIMENSION- AND NOT JUST MERELY TECHNOLOGICAL - AS WELL AS THE COMPLEX RELATIONSHIP WITH THE HISTORICAL, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXT IN WHICH THEY ARE LOCATED. AN OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE IS TO TRACE THE DIALECTICAL DIMENSIONS OF CONTINUITY AND RADICAL CHANGE IMPLICIT IN THE EVOLUTION OF DIGITAL MEDIA (FROM WEB 2.0 TO PERSONAL MEDIA AND MOBILE DEVICES), CROSSING BOTH THE PROCESSES OF CULTURAL CONVERGENCE AND THE NEW VIRTUOUS PRACTICES OF PARTECIPATION AND DIGITAL SOCIALIZATION AS WELL AS PATHOLOGICAL ONES LINKED TO CYBERBULLYING, A PHENOMENON LARGELY DIFFERENT FROM TRADITIONAL BULLYING AS IT IS RELATED TO THE PECULIARITIES OF COMPUTER MEDIATE COMMUNICATION . FINALLY, PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO IDENTITY NARRATIVES ON THE SOCIAL WEB AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF ONLINE SOCIAL CAPITAL AS WELL AS THE HEURISTIC POTENTIAL OF ETHNOGRAPHIC SURVEY METHODOLOGIES. |
