THE COURSE HAS THE GOAL TO PRESENT CONCEPTS, METHODS AND EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS IN NUCLEAR AND SUB-NUCLEAR PHYSICS, WITH SPECIAL ATTENTION TO CONTEMPORARY RESEARCHES. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: THE COURSE PROVIDES A WIDE AND DEEP PICTURE OF THE EXPERIMENTAL EVIDENCE THAT LED TO THE STANDARD MODEL OF FUNDAMENTAL INTERACTIONS AND ON THE OPEN ISSUES OF RESEARCH. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO WORK OUT EXERCISES OR EXAMPLES UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF THE TEACHER. THEY ARE ALSO STIMULATED TO GO THROUGH THE PROCESS OF CONCEPT DESIGN FOR HIGH-ENERGY EXPERIMENTS. |
Prerequisites | |

THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE FOLLOWINGS ARGUMENTS IS REQUIRED: QUANTUM MECHANICS. CONTINUOUS SYMMETRIES. CLASSIC ELECTROMAGNETISM AND SPECIAL THEORY OF RELATIVITY. MAXWELL, KLEIN-GORDON AND DIRAC EQUATIONS. LAGRANGIAN FORMALISM AND PERTURBATIVE EXPANSION (FEYNMAN DIAGRAMS). BASIC ELEMENTS OF ATOMIC AND NUCLEAR PHYSICS. RADIOACTIVE DECAYS. NUCLEAR MODELS. CLASSIFICATION OF PARTICLES. |

TEACHING CONSISTS OF 40 HOURS OF FRONTAL LESSONS AND 8 HOURS OF EXERCISES. LESSONS AND EXERCISES WILL ALSO BE PROVIDED ON THE TOPICS OUTLINED WITH THE AID OF AUDIOVISUAL MATERIAL. EXERCISES WILL INCLUDE THE DIRECT PARTICIPATION OF STUDENTS WHO WILL BE INVITED TO ATTEND AND DISCUSS THE EXERCISES PROPOSED BY THE TEACHER IN THE CLASSROOM TOGETHER WITH THE REST OF THE CLASS. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES AND THE VERIFICATION OF THE ABILITY TO APPLY AND DEVELOP IN A CRITICAL AND AUTONOMOUS WAY THE EXPOSED ARGUMENTS WILL BE CERTIFIED BY A FINAL ORAL EXAM WITH GRADES ON A SCALE OF 30. IN THE DISCUSSION, QUESTIONS AND EXERCISES WILL BE PROPOSED TO VERIFY THE LEVEL OF UNDERSTANDING OF THE STUDENT. THE MINIMUM VOTE (18/30) IS ATTRIBUTED WHEN THE STUDENT SHOWS UNCERTAINTIES AND A LITTLE EXPOSURE CAPACITY. THE MAXIMUM LEVEL (30/30) IS GRANTED WHEN THE STUDENT SHOWS A COMPLETE AND DEEP KNOWLEDGE OF THE DIFFERENT TOPICS DISCUSSED, AND IS ALSO ABLE TO RESOLVE THE PROPOSED EXERCISES. THE LODE IS ATTRIBUTED WHEN THE CANDIDATE SHOWS MASTERY OF THE ARGUMENTS, AND PRESENTS THE TOPICS WITH GOOD LANGUAGE PROPERTIES AND AUTONOMOUS PROCESSING CAPACITY, EVEN IN CONTEXTS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE PROPOSED BY THE PROFESSOR. |
