THE COURSE PROVIDES A WIDE DESCRIPTION OF THE PHENOMENOLOGY AND OF THE MAIN THEORIES OF SUPERCONDUCTIVITY. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT KNOWS THE MAIN ASPECTS OF SUPERCONDUCTIVITY, THE MAIN PROPERTIES OF THE SUPERCONDUCTING MATERIALS AND DEVICES AS WELL AS THEIR MOST RELEVANT APPLICATIONS. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT IS ABLE TO INTERPRET IN A CORRECT WAY THE EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS OBTAINED ON SUPERCONDUCTIING SYSTEMS, TO OBTAIN FROM THESE DATA INFORMATION ON PHYSICAL QUANTITITIES OF SUPERCONDUCTING MATERIALS (CRITICAL TEMPERATURE, COHERENCE LENGTH, PENETRATION DEPTH, CRITICAL MAGNETIC FIELD, CRITICAL CURRENTS), TO IDENTIFY SUPERCONDUCTING MATERIALS IN RELATION TO THEIR POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS. |
Prerequisites | |
---|---|
A GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF THE FOLLOWING TOPICS IS REQUIRED: CLASSICAL THERMODYNAMICS, ELECTROMAGNETISM IN THE MATTER, QUANTUM MECHANICS AND OF THE MAIN ARGUMENTS OF THE SOLID STATE PHYSICS. |
Contents | |
---|---|
INTRODUCTION TO THE SUPERCONDUCTIVITY AND PHENOMENOLOGU OF THE SUPERCONDUCTING MATERIALS (4 HOURS). THERMODYMANIC PROPRERTIES OF THE SUPERCONDUCTORS (2 H). LONDON AND PIPPARD MODELS (3 H). AC PROPERTIES OF A SUPERCONDUCTOR AND THE SURFACE IMPEDANCE (3 H). THE FLUXON AND THE S/N WALL ENERGY (2 H). THE GINZBURG-LANDAU THEORY (6 H). TYPE I AND TYPE II SUPERCONDUCTORS AND THE CRITICAL MAGNETIC FIELDS (3 H). CRITICAL CURRENTS (2). THE VORTICES (2 H). CRITICAL MAGNETIC FIELDS IN ANISOTROPIC SUPERCONDUCTORS (4 H). SURFACE SUPERCONDUCTIVITY (3 H). MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF THE SUPERCONDUCTORS (2 H). THE CRITICAL STATE AND THE PINNING PROPERTIES (4 H). THE JOSEPHSON EFFECT (8 H). |
Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
LECTURES ARE ORGANIZED IN 48 FRONTAL TEACHING HOURS (6 CFU). ALTHOUGH NOT MANDATORY, ATTENDING THE COURSE IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
THE VERIFICATION AND EVALUATION OF THE LEARNING LEVEL OF THE STUDENT IS DONE BY MEANS OF A FINAL EXAM CONSISTING IN AN ORAL TEST. THE ORAL TEST CONSISTS OF QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION ON THE ARGUMENTS INDICATED IN THE PROGRAM AND DEVELOPED DURING THE LECTURES AND IT IS FINALIZED TO ASSESS THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE, CONSAPEABILITY, EXPOSURE CAPACITY AND SYNTHESIS OF THE STUDENT. THE MINIMUM PASSING GRADE FOR THE EXAM IS 18/30, WHICH WILL BE AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES AN ACCEPTABLE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE. THE LAUDE MAY BE ATTRIBUTED TO THE STUDENTS WHO HAVE RECEIVED THE MAXIMUM VOTE OF 30/30 AND HAVE DEMONSTRATED THE CAPACITY TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND COMPETENCES ON SUBJECTS OTHER THAN THOSE. |
