Objectives
THE COURSE OFFERS A BROAD AND DETAILED REVIEW OF STELLAR, PLANETARY AND RELATIVISTIC ASTROPHYSICS.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
STELLAR ATMSPHERES AND INTERIORS ARE EXPLAINED ALONG WITH STELLAR EVOLUTION FROM FORMATION TO FINAL STAGES. THE CURRENT KNOWLEDGE OF PLANETS IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM AND EXOPLANETS IS PRESENTED. A BROAD SPACE IS DEVOTED TO RELATIVISTIC ASTROPHYSICS, FROM NEUTRON STARS TO BLACK HOLES, INTERACTING BINARIES AND GRAVITATIONAL ASTRONOMY.
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE STUDENT ACQUIRES THE BASIC TOOLS FOR THE COMPREHENSION AND CONSTRUCTION OF REALISTIC STELLAR MODELS AND FOR THE INTERPRETATION OF FUNDAMENTAL OBSERVATIONS IN THE EXOPLANETARY FIELD AND IN RELATIVISTIC ASTROPHYSICS. THE ACQUIRED COMPETENCES ARE THE BASIS FOR FOLLOWING COURSES ON GALAXIES AND COSMOLOGY. MOREOVER, THEY ALLOW AN IMMEDIATE ENTRANCE IN RESEARCH PROGRAMMES FOCUSED ON THE COVERED TOPICS.
Prerequisites
ATOMIC AND MOLECULAR SPECTROSCOPY. CANONICAL AND GRANCANONICAL ENSEMBLE. RELATIVISTIC KINEMATICS; BASICS OF NUCLEAR PHYSICS. SOMMERFELD MODEL OF SOLIDS. CLASSICAL ELECTRODYNAMICS PROCESSES, INTERACTION OF RADIATION WITH MATTER.
Contents
ASTRONOMICAL MEASUREMENTS : PHOTOMETRIC QUANTITIES, SPECTROSCOPY, ASTROMETRY, DISTANCE LADDER, BINARY SYSTEMS, MEASURES OF MASS AND RADIUS. (5 HRS)
STELLAR ATMOSPHERES: SPECTRAL CLASSIFICATION, H-R DIAGRAM, RADIATIVE TRANSFER, BOLTZMANN AND SAHA EQUATIONS, SPECTRAL LINES. (6 HRS)
STELLAR INTERIORS: NUCLEAR ENERGY, HYDROSTATIC EQUILIBRIUM, TRANSPORT BY RADIATION AND CONVECTION, STELLAR STRUCTURE EQUATIONS, STELLAR MODELS, POLYTROPES, MAIN SEQUENCE, THE SUN, MAGNETIC ACTIVITY. (6HRS)

Teaching Methods
PROJECTION OF POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONS WITH ASTRONOMICAL IMAGES, PLOTS AND DIAGRAMS. THE EQUATIONS AND THEIR DERIVATIONS ARE DISCUSSED WITH THE STUDENTS TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE FULLY UNDERSTOOD. ALL FILES ARE MADE AVAILABLE TO THE STUDENTS.
Verification of learning
ORAL INTERVIEW: THE STUDENT ILLUSTRATES A TOPIC OF HIS/HER CHOICE IN GREAT DETAIL AND ANSWERS TWO MORE QUESTIONS ON DIFFERENT TOPICS REPORTING THE ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL CONCEPTS. THE MINIMUM SCORE IS OBTAINED WITH THE PHYSICAL CONCEPTS OF THE CHOSEN ARGUMENT. THE MAXIMUM SCORE IS ASSIGNED TO STUDENTS WHO MASTER THE PHYSICAL CONCEPTS OF THE WHOLE COURSE AND ARE ABLE TO ILLUSTRATE ALL DETAILS OF THE CHOSEN TOPIC. STUDENTS WITH EXCEPTIONAL KNOWLEDGE AND LANGUAGE SKILLS, EVEN IN BROADER CONTEXTS WITH RESPECT TO THOSE PROPOSED IN THE LECTURES, ARE AWARDED WITH A LAUDE.
