Objectives
THE AIM OF THE MODULE IS TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO BYZANTIUM’S CULTURAL HERITAGE IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. AMONG THE SUBJECT MATTER THAT WILL BE PRESENTED, THERE WILL BE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES, STILL-STANDING BUILDINGS AND THEIR DECORATION, AS WELL AS ARTEFACTS RELATED TO RELIGIOUS AND LAY PRACTICES AND DAILY LIFE. THE MODULE WILL COVER FROM THE FOUNDATION OF THE CAPITAL CITY OF CONSTANTINOPLE IN AD 330 TO THE FALL OF THE BYZANTINE EMPIRE IN 1453. THE GEOGRAPHICAL AREA INVOLVED STRETCHES BETWEEN ITALY, THE BALKANS, ANATOLIA, THE ISLANDS OF THE EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN AND NORTH AFRICA.
Prerequisites
THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE (B2) IS ESSENTIAL.
Contents
THIS MODULE WILL INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO A SELECTION OF IMPORTANT TOPICS IN THE VISUAL AND MATERIAL CULTURE OF BYZANTIUM AS WELL AS TO METHODOLOGICAL QUESTIONS. ISSUES OF MOBILITY AND MIGRATION OF PEOPLE, OBJECTS, AND IDEAS WILL BE FOCAL.
Teaching Methods
IN-CLASS LECTURES AND DISCUSSIONS; IF POSSIBLE WE WILL ORGANISE A ONE-DAY STUDY TRIP TO ROME OR NAPLES.
Verification of learning
THE ACQUISITION OF COMPETENCES INHERENT TO THE THEMES DEALT WITH OVER THE MODULE WILL BE VERIFIED THROUGH A WRITTEN ASSESSMENT (MULTIPLE CHOICE TEST) AND AN ORAL EXAMINATION.
