Objectives
GENERAL LEARNING OUTCOMES

THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE IS THE ACQUISITION OF WRITTEN AND ORAL SKILLS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE CORRESPONDING TO LEVEL B2+ OF THE CEFR WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO SPECIFIC FIELDS OF STUDY (HISTORY-LITERATURE-PHILOLOGY) THROUGH THE LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF SPECIALIZED TEXTS.


KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

THE STUDENT WILL DEVELOP KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION SKILLS REGARDING:
•THE MOST POPULAR COMPUTER APPLICATIONS FOR DIGITIZING AND ARCHIVING DOCUMENTS BOTH IN THE LITERARY AND CULTURAL HERITAGE FIELDS
•SPECIFIC USES OF THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE IN SPECIFIC SOCIOLINGUISTIC CONTEXTS
•THE COMMUNICATION OF DIFFERENT GENRES AND FORMATS, INCLUDING THE MOST POPULAR ONES, ALSO THROUGH NEW INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES.


APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
•PRODUCE AND UNDERSTAND TEXTS OF DIFFERENT NATURE AND TYPE BY APPLYING THE PRINCIPLES OF LINGUISTIC INQUIRY TO A WIDE VARIETY OF COMMUNICATIVE CONTEXTS, INCLUDING IN FOREIGN LANGUAGES
•PERFORM DATA MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES, INCLUDING IN ELECTRONIC FORMAT, ANALYSIS AND CRITICAL EVALUATION OF THE ISSUES ADDRESSED (DESCRIPTION OF LINGUISTIC STRUCTURES, SEMANTIC-STYLISTIC INTERPRETATION OR ENTIRE AUTHORIAL CORPORA OR INDIVIDUAL WORKS, ETC.)
•COMMUNICATE AND ARGUE IN DIFFERENT PROFESSIONAL FIELDS, INCLUDING IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE;
•USE THE MOST POPULAR AND COMMON LINGUISTIC UNIT LABELING SYSTEMS AT ALL LEVELS OF ANALYSIS AND THE COMPUTER TOOLS DEDICATED TO THEM
•MANAGE AND QUERY LINGUISTIC DATABASES, ELECTRONIC DICTIONARIES, FREQUENCY LEXICONS, AND DERIVE DATA FROM THEM FOR QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS AND INTERLINGUAL COMPARISONS
•APPLY THE PRINCIPLES OF LINGUISTIC AND SOCIO-LINGUISTIC INQUIRY IN DIFFERENT COMMUNICATIVE CONTEXTS
•IDENTIFY AND UNDERSTAND THE INFORMATION STRUCTURE OF A WRITTEN AND ORAL TEXT.


MAKING JUDGEMENTS

THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
•ANALYSE AND RE-ELABORATE ALL ASPECTS OF LINGUISTIC PRODUCTION, BOTH ORAL AND WRITTEN, OF TEXTS OF A LITERARY NATURE BUT ALSO THOSE OF A TECHNICAL-SPECIALIST NATURE RELATING TO VARIOUS KNOWLEDGE, VARIOUS CONTEXTS AND VARIOUS AREAS OF KNOWLEDGE.


LEARNING SKILLS

THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
•IDENTIFY AND USE THE TOOLS OF ANALYSIS, IN-DEPTH STUDY, AND SCIENTIFIC UPDATING FOR LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY DISCIPLINES
•ACCESS SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE PRODUCED IN ENGLISH
•USE THE MAIN COMPUTER TOOLS IN THE SPECIFIC AREAS OF COMPETENCE (SKILLS RELATED TO THE NEW LANGUAGES OF COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION).

KNOWLEDGE OF FUNDAMENTALS OF ENGLISH PHONOLOGY, MORPHOLOGY AND SYNTAX (B1 LEVEL OF THE CEFR CORRESPONDING TO THE FOLLOWING DESCRIPTION: [THE SPEAKER] "CAN UNDERSTAND THE MAIN IDEAS OF COMPLEX TEXTS ON BOTH CONCRETE AND ABSTRACT TOPICS, INCLUDING TECHNICAL DISCUSSIONS IN STUDENTS' FIELD OF SPECIALISATION. CAN PRODUCE CLEAR, DETAILED TEXTS ON A WIDE RANGE OF SUBJECTS AND EXPLAIN A VIEWPOINT ON A SPECIALIZED ISSUE."

COURSE TITLE: ENGLISH FOR THE ARTS

THE COURSE AIMS TO ENHANCE READING, TEXT COMPREHENSION, AND LANGUAGE PRODUCTION SKILLS IN RELATION TO THE SPECIALISED VOCABULARY OF ART HISTORY AND CRITICISM. THIS WILL BE ACHIEVED THROUGH THE ANALYSIS OF A VARIETY OF AUTHENTIC TEXTS, INCLUDING BOOKS, NEWSPAPERS, MAGAZINES, JOURNALS, AND WEBSITES, AS WELL AS RELEVANT AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES LECTURES AND WORKSHOPS FEATURING PRACTICAL IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES.
Verification of learning
THE EXAM CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN TEST AND AN ORAL TEST. THE WRITTEN TEST INCLUDES LISTENING AND COMPREHENSION EXERCISES BASED ON A MONOLOGUE AND/OR DIALOGUE, AS WELL AS THE COMPREHENSION AND ANALYSIS OF A SPECIALIST TEXT RELATED TO ART HISTORY AND CRITICISM. THE ORAL EXAM WILL CONSIST OF A BRIEF PRESENTATION ON TOPICS ALIGNED WITH THE STUDENT’S ACADEMIC PATHWAY. MIDTERM ASSESSMENTS MAY ALSO BE SCHEDULED. THE WRITTEN TEST IS A PREREQUISITE FOR THE ORAL EXAM, AND ITS RESULT DOES NOT IN ANY WAY CONSTITUTE A STARTING POINT FOR THE FINAL GRADE. ACHIEVEMENT OF THE LEARNING OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING THE EXAM, WITH A FINAL MARK EXPRESSED ON A THIRTY-POINT SCALE. MARKS BELOW 18 WILL BE CONSIDERED INSUFFICIENT AND INDICATIVE OF UNMET LEARNING OUTCOMES.
