Objectives
GENERAL LEARNING OUTCOMES

THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE IS THE ACQUISITION OF WRITTEN AND ORAL SKILLS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE CORRESPONDING TO THE B1 LEVEL OF THE CEFR WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO SPECIFIC AREAS OF STUDY (HISTORY-LITERATURE-PHILOLOGY) THROUGH THE LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF SPECIALIZED TEXTS.


KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

THE STUDENT WILL:
•ACQUIRE THE PHONOLOGICAL SYSTEM OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND UNDERSTAND ITS DISTINCTIVE ELEMENTS IN COMPARISON WITH THE ITALIAN LANGUAGE
•KNOW THE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF BOTH INFLECTIONAL AND DERIVATIONAL MORPHOLOGY
•ACQUIRE THE MAIN SYNTACTIC STRUCTURES OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
•KNOW THE MAIN PURPOSES AND FUNCTIONS OF SPECIFIC TEXT TYPES (ESSAY, ARTICLE, REVIEW)
•KNOW THE MAIN TRADITIONAL AND ELECTRONIC REFERENCE SOURCES
•UNDERSTAND THE MECHANISMS UNDERLYING THE FORMATION OF SPECIFIC LANGUAGE STRUCTURES.

•RECOGNIZE AND REPEAT THE PHONEMES OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
•IDENTIFY THE MEANING AND SYNTACTIC FUNCTION OF WORDS IN A SENTENCE THROUGH THEIR MORPHOLOGICAL STRUCTURE
•IDENTIFY THE SALIENT ELEMENTS OF A WRITTEN AND ORAL TEXT FROM DIFFERENT GENRES
•IDENTIFY AND UNDERSTAND THE INFORMATION STRUCTURE OF A TEXT

•CONSTRUCTIVELY DISCUSS SPECIALISED TOPICS IN ENGLISH.

•COMMUNICATE CLEARLY, THROUGH APPROPRIATE LEXICAL AND GRAMMATICAL CHOICES, THE ESSENTIAL CONTENTS OF SPECIALISED TEXTS

COURSE TITLE: ENGLISH FOR CULTURAL HERITAGE

THE COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO TWO MODULES. THE FIRST MODULE FOCUSES ON ENGLISH PHONETICS AND PRONUNCIATION, WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO SEGMENTAL FEATURES (INDIVIDUAL SOUNDS) AND SUPRASEGMENTAL FEATURES (INTONATION, STRESS, RHYTHM), WHICH ARE ESSENTIAL FOR EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION. THE SECOND MODULE IS DEDICATED TO DEVELOPING READING, TEXT COMPREHENSION, AND LANGUAGE PRODUCTION SKILLS RELATED TO THE SPECIALISED VOCABULARY OF CULTURAL HERITAGE, THROUGH THE ANALYSIS OF A RANGE OF AUTHENTIC TEXTS DRAWN FROM BOOKS, NEWSPAPERS, MAGAZINES, JOURNALS, AND WEBSITES.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF LECTURES AND WORKSHOPS WITH PRACTICAL IN-CLASS EXERCISES.
Verification of learning
THE EXAM CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN TEST AND AN ORAL TEST. THE WRITTEN TEST INCLUDES LISTENING AND COMPREHENSION EXERCISES BASED ON A MONOLOGUE AND/OR DIALOGUE, AS WELL AS THE COMPREHENSION AND ANALYSIS OF A SPECIALIST TEXT RELATED TO THE HISTORY AND CRITICISM OF ART. THE ORAL EXAM WILL CONSIST OF A BRIEF PRESENTATION ON TOPICS ALIGNED WITH THE STUDENT’S ACADEMIC PATHWAY. MIDTERM ASSESSMENTS MAY ALSO BE SCHEDULED. THE WRITTEN TEST IS A PREREQUISITE FOR THE ORAL EXAM, AND ITS RESULT DOES NOT IN ANY WAY CONSTITUTE A STARTING POINT FOR THE FINAL GRADE. ACHIEVEMENT OF THE LEARNING OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING THE EXAM, WITH A FINAL MARK EXPRESSED ON A THIRTY-POINT SCALE. MARKS BELOW 18 WILL BE CONSIDERED INSUFFICIENT AND INDICATIVE OF UNMET LEARNING OUTCOMES.
