Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PRESENT THE BASIC CONCEPTS, PROTOCOLS AND ARCHITECTURES OF FUTURE NETWORK INFRASTRUCTURES AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS (5G), FROM ULTRA-BROADBAND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES AND THE CLOUDIZATION OF NETWORK ACCESS TO THE SOFTWAREIZATION AND VIRTUALIZATION OF ROUTER OPERATIONS. THE COURSE ALSO AIMS TO OFFER AN OVERVIEW OF CURRENT RESEARCH CHALLENGES IN THE CONTEXT OF 5G, SPECIFICALLY ON THE TOPIC OF CYBERSECURITY AND
THE PROTECTION OF NETWORK INFRASTRUCTURES, AND A WAY TO MODEL THE AVAILABLE SOLUTIONS TO THEM.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
• KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN TECHNOLOGIES UNDERLYING THE NEW GENERATION OF CELLULAR INFRASTRUCTURES
• UNDERSTANDING THE THREATS/ATTACKS TO THE ECOSYSTEM OF 5G TECHNOLOGIES AND SOLUTIONS AND POSSIBLE PROTECTION MECHANISMS

PRACTICAL SKILLS (APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING)
• MODELING OF A PART OF THE ECOSYSTEM OF 5G TECHNOLOGIES AND SOLUTIONS
• MODELING OF ATTACKS AND DEFENSE SOLUTIONS IN THE 5G TECHNOLOGICAL CONTEXT
Prerequisites
KNOWLEDGE OF COMPUTER NETWORKS AND INFORMATION SECURITY ELEMENTS ARE NECESSARY.
Contents
- INTRODUCTION TO 5G, ULTRABAND COMMUNICATIONS AND NOTIONS OF SOFTWARE DEFINED RADIO (SDR). THESE TOPICS WILL BE COVERED IN 2 LESSONS FOR A TOTAL OF 4 HOURS.
- DESCRIPTION OF THE BASIC NOTIONS OF NETWORK MANAGEMENT AND CONTROL VIA SOFTWARE WITH SOFTWARE DEFINED NETWORKS (SDN) AND OPEN FLOW, THE SOFTWAREIZATION OF THE EQUIPMENT WITH NETWORK FUNCTION VIRTUALIZATION (NFV) AND THE DIVERSIFICATION OF THE TYPE OF SERVICE QUALITY WITH NETWORK SLICING FOR DEFINITION OF LOGICAL, VIRTUALIZED AND INDEPENDENT NETWORKS ON THE SAME PHYSICAL NETWORK INFRASTRUCTURE. THESE TOPICS WILL BE COVERED IN 2 LESSONS FOR A TOTAL OF 4 HOURS.
- DESCRIPTION OF THE FUTURE EVOLUTION OF ACCESS NETWORK ARCHITECTURES ACHIEVED USING CLOUD-RAN, WHICH REPRESENTS A CENTRALIZED CLOUD COMPUTING-BASED ARCHITECTURE FOR RADIO ACCESS NETWORKS, AND MULTI-ACCESS EDGE COMPUTING (MEC) TO EXECUTE APPLICATIONS AND RELATED PROCESSING TASKS CLOSER TO THE CUSTOMER THAN A CELLULAR NETWORK. THESE TOPICS WILL BE COVERED IN A TOTAL OF 2 LESSONS FOR A TOTAL OF 4 HOURS.
- PRESENTATION OF CURRENT RESEARCH CHALLENGES IN THE CONTEXT OF 5G TECHNOLOGIES, ESPECIALLY ON THE TOPIC OF RESILIENCE AND PROTECTION OF NETWORKS FROM POSSIBLE FAILURES AND CYBER ATTACKS, INTEGRATING THE USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND BLOCKCHAIN IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF CONTROL STRATEGIES, E.G. . IN SDN CONTROLLERS. THESE TOPICS WILL BE COVERED IN 3 LESSONS FOR A TOTAL OF 6 HOURS.
Teaching Methods
- FRONTAL LESSONS
- ASSIGNMENT OF TOPICS TO STUDY INDEPENDENTLY THROUGH THE STUDY OF ACADEMIC LITERATURE ON A TOPIC RELEVANT TO THE RESEARCH PATH OF THE PARTICIPATING DOCTORAL STUDENTS
- DEFINITION OF 5G NETWORK MODELING PROJECTS AND POSSIBLE ATTACKS AND PROTECTIONS TO BE APPLIED.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TRAINING OBJECTIVES WILL TAKE PLACE THROUGH THE EVALUATION OF THE PROJECTS CARRIED OUT AND WITH A FINAL INTERVIEW
