Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO:
- CONSOLIDATE ENGLISH LANGUAGE COMPETENCE BY PROVIDING FURTHER PRACTICE IN THE FOUR SKILLS AND BY GIVING STUDENTS ADDITIONAL TOOLS FOR TEXTUAL ANALYSIS BEFORE FACING THE MAIN ISSUES IN THE TRANSLATION OF LITERARY AND SPECIALIZED TEXTS;
- CONCENTRATE ON PRAGMATIC AND STYLISTIC ASPECTS OF LITERARY, AUDIOVISUAL AND SONG TRANSLATION.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL:
-ACQUIRE A LEVEL OF COMPETENCE CORRESPONDING TO AN INITIAL C2 OF THE COMMON EUROPEAN LANGUAGE FRAMEWORK;
-LEARN HOW TO REFLECT ON THE STYLISTIC AND PRAGMATIC FEATURES AND THE TRANSLATION STRATEGIES IN ENGLISH-ITALIAN LITERARY AND AUDIOVISUAL TRANSLATIONS;
-LEARN HOW TO ANALYSE ENGLISH THROUGH THE STUDY OF LINGUISTICS TO FACE THE MAIN PROBLEMATIC ASPECTS OF THE TRANSLATION OF DIFFERENT TEXT TYPES AND GENRES.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
-IDENTIFY THE PRAGMASTYLISTIC ASPECTS OF A TEXT IN ORDER TO OBTAIN EFFECTIVE AND APPROPRIATE TRANSLATIONS;
-MASTER THE LANGUAGE IN EVERYDAY, PROFESSIONAL AND ACADEMIC CONTEXTS;
-WORK AS TRANSLATORS IN PROFESSIONAL DOMAINS SUCH AS PUBLISHING AND AUDIOVISUAL INDUSTRY (DUBBING AND SUBTITLING);
-ANALYSE AND TRANSLATE LITERARY AS WELL AS TECHNICAL AND SPECIALISED TEXTS, SPECIFICALLY RELATED TO SOME PRECISE CONTEXTS OF USE SUCH AS AUDIOVISUAL PRODUCTS AND SONGS ADAPTATIONS;

MAKING JUDGEMENTS
STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
-IMPROVE THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND USE OF LINGUISTICALLY COMPLEX STRUCTURES AND TEXTS (WITH A VARIETY OF STYLES AND REGISTERS BELONGING TO LITERARY AND NON LITERARY SOURCES);
-ENHANCE THEIR ABILITIES IN CRITICALLY READING AND ANALYZING TEXTS BEFORE TRANSLATING THEM.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
-EFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATE IN ENGLISH AT AN EARLY C1 PROFICIENCY LEVEL.

LEARNING SKILLS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
- SELECT AND USE THE MAIN TOOLS OF ANALYSIS AND TRANSLATION STRATEGIES, WITH SPECIFIC REFERENCE TO PRAGMATIC AND STYLISTIC ASPECTS;
- IDENTIFY STYLISTIC FUNCTIONS AND FEATURES OF SOURCE TEXTS AND OFFER SOLUTIONS TO THEIR TRANSFER INTO THE TARGET LANGUAGE ALSO CRITICALLY COMMENTING ON THE EXISTING OFFICIAL TRANSLATIONS.
- CRITICALLY ACCESS AND USE BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS AND DIGITAL RESOURCES;
- USE THE TECHNOLOGICAL TOOLS AVAILABLE IN THE FIELD OF AUDIOVISUAL TRANSLATION (DUBBING AND SUBTITLING SOFTWARE).
Prerequisites
A FULL C1 LEVEL OF THE COMMON EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE IS REQUIRED TO TAKE THE COURSE.
DURING THE THREE-YEAR DEGREE COURSE STUDENTS MUST HAVE PASSED THE FOLLOWING EXAMS: ENGLISH LANGUAGE I, II, III AND ENGLISH LITERATURE I, II, III.
Contents
STUDENTS WILL DEAL WITH SEVERAL GENRES OF TEXTS IN TRANSLATION AND WILL BE PROVIDED WITH THE MOST OUTSTANDING THEORIES IN TRANSLATION STUDIES. TOGETHER WITH THEORETICAL ISSUES, STUDENTS WILL TRAIN THEIR TRANSLATION ABILITIES DURING IN-CLASS EXERCISES WITH TEXTS BELONGING TO DIFFERENT GENRES, LITERARY, MUSICAL AND TECHNICAL.
THE 45-HOUR MODULE BY THE OFFICIAL TEACHER AND THE LANGUAGE PART DEALING WITH GRAMMAR, LEXIS, READING, WRITING, LISTENING WILL BE ANNUAL (FROM SEPTEMBER TO MAY).

LITERARY TRANSLATION 10 HOURS
AVT (AUDIOVISUAL TRANSLATION) 6 HOURS
HUMOUR AND CULTURE 6 HOURS
SONGS ADAPTATIONS 4 HOURS
TECHNICAL TRANSLATION 4 HOURS
TASK PRESENTATIONS 6 HOURS

SOME IN ITINERE TASKS / TESTS WILL BE AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE COURSE (THEORETICAL TASK, SONG TRANSLATION TASK, DUBBING TASK). SUCH TASKS/TESTS ARE INTENDED FOR ATTENDING STUDENTS ONLY.
ALL THE STUDENTS WILL SUBMIT A FINAL WORK OF TRANSLATION AND ANALYSIS.
Teaching Methods
THEORETICAL LECTURES, IN-CLASS EXERCISES OF TEXT ANALYSIS AND TRANSLATION, TASKS TO BE CARRIED OUT AT HOME AND DISCUSSED DURING CLASSES, PRACTICAL LANGUAGE ACTIVITIES IN THE CLASSROOM AND /OR LANGUAGE LABS WITH NATIVE-SPEAKER LANGUAGE EXPERTS; SELF-STUDY. TEASCHING APPROACHES: ASK-BASED LEARNING, PROJECT-BASED LEARNING, LEARNING BY DOING.
Verification of learning
THE EXAM (PART OF THE OFFICIAL TEACHER) CONSISTS OF 1) A WRITTEN TEST (TRANSLATION AND ANALYSIS OF A TEXT CHOSEN BY THE STUDENT) TO BE CARRIED OUT INDEPENDENTLY AND TO BE SUBMITTED TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE ORAL EXAM (FOR ALL STUDENTS) AND A TRANSLATION TEST DURING THE ORAL EXAM SESSIONS (NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS); 2) AN ORAL TEST DURING WHICH THE TASKS CARRIED OUT DURING THE YEAR AND THE FINAL WORK DONE AT HOME WILL BE DISCUSSED (ATTENDING STUDENTS). NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS WILL PRESENT THE FINAL WORK, TRANSLATE A SHORT TEXT DURING THE ORAL EXAM, AND STUDY THE THEORETICAL MATERIALS PROVIDED BY THE TEACHER.
THE GENERAL WRITTEN TEST (LANGUAGE PART) LASTING 105 MINUTES WILL BE RELATED TO THE CONTENTS OF THE ADOPTED TEXTBOOKS AND THE LEVEL OF COMPETENCE ESTABLISHED AS AN OBJECTIVE AND WILL CONSIST OF A SECTION OF GRAMMAR AND READING COMPREHENSION - 60 MINUTES AND A SECTION OF WRITING/COMPOSITION (ARTICLE) - 45 MINUTES. THE WRITTEN TEST TAKES PLACE THREE TIMES DURING AN ACADEMIC YEAR (SUMMER SESSION, AUTUMN SESSION, WINTER SESSION), IS PREPARATORY TO THE ORAL EXAM, AND IS VALID FOR TWO ACADEMIC YEARS FOR ALL SESSIONS. 'ATTENDING' STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO TAKE THE COMPOSITION PART AT THE END OF THE COURSE. STUDENTS WHO PASS THE TEST HAVE THE OPTION TO ACCEPT THE GRADE FOR THAT PART AND KEEP IT FOR TWO YEARS OR REJECT IT AND RETAKE IT ON THE DAY OF THE WRITTEN EXAM. EVEN THOSE WHO TAKE THE IN ITINERE WRITING TEST MUST TAKE THE WRITTEN TEST (WHICH WOULD ONLY BE GRAMMAR/USE OF ENGLISH AND READING COMPREHENSION) ON THE OFFICIAL DATE. THE GRADE PUBLISHED TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE 3 DIFFERENT PARTS: WRITING (IN ITINERE OR OFFICIAL) + GRAMMAR/USE OF ENGLISH – READING COMPREHENSION.
ATTENDING STUDENTS WHO CHOOSE TO TAKE THE COMPOSITION TEST ON THE DAY OF THE WRITTEN EXAM CANCEL THE IN ITINERE TEST ALREADY TAKEN AND, IF THEY DO NOT PASS THE WRITTEN TEST IN ITS ENTIRETY, THEY CAN NO LONGER REFER TO THE TEST TAKEN DURING THE COURSE. ANY COMPOSITION TEST TAKEN BY ATTENDING STUDENTS DURING THE COURSE HAS THE SAME VALIDITY AS THE WRITTEN TEST.
THE ORAL TEST IS DIVIDED INTO 3 PARTS: 1. A LISTENING TEST IN THE LABORATORY WITH THE AIM OF VERIFYING THE ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND ORAL TEXTS; 2. AN ENGLISH CONVERSATION TEST ON ONE OF THE TOPICS COVERED DURING THE ASSISTED STUDY ACTIVITIES; 3. A FINAL EXAMINATION CONSISTING OF A DISCUSSION ON SOME OF THE THEMES COVERED IN THE MODULE TAUGHT BY THE TEACHER AND ON THE TRANSLATION AND ANALYSIS WORK DONE AT HOME. IT IS ALSO SPECIFIED THAT MIDTERM TESTS ARE PROVIDED EXCLUSIVELY FOR ATTENDING STUDENTS.

PLEASE NOTE: TO BE CONSIDERED ATTENDING STUDENTS, STUDENTS MUST ATTEND 80% OF THE CLASSES.
