Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO DEVELOP:
- ADVANCED KNOWLEDGE OF PARTICULAR ASPECTS OF ENGLISH LITERATURE AND CULTURE, ALSO CONNECTED TO CONTEMPORANEITY;
- KNOWLEDGE OF ADVANCED AND DIVERSIFIED METHODOLOGICAL TOOLS;
- CRITICAL AWARENESS.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO KNOW IN DEPTH:
- THE CULTURAL CONTEXT AND THE LITERARY WORKS RELATED TO THE COURSE;
- DIFFERENT METHODOLOGIES OF ANALYSIS OF THE LITERARY TEXT;
- THE CONTEMPORARY CRITICAL DEBATE.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
- SELECT AND APPLY APPROPRIATE ANALYTICAL AND CRITICAL TOOLS TO THE LITERARY TEXT;
- UNDERSTAND BRITISH CULTURAL PHENOMENA ALSO RELATED TO CONTEMPORANEITY;
- UNDERTAKE RESEARCH IN THE FIELD OF ENGLISH LITERATURE AND CULTURE.

MAKING JUDGEMENTS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
- FORMULATE AUTONOMOUS JUDGEMENTS ON ENGLISH LITERATURE AND CULTURE;
- MAKE COMPARISONS BETWEEN DIFFERENT CULTURAL CONTEXTS.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO PRESENT THE CONTENTS OF THE DISCIPLINE AND THE CRITICAL DEBATE WITH FLUENCY BOTH IN ITALIAN AND IN ENGLISH.

LEARNING SKILLS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
- SELECT THE METHODOLOGICAL TOOLS APPROPRIATE TO UPGRADE THEIR KNOWLEDGE;
- USE SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE APTLY;
- DEVELOP AN APTITUDE FOR RESEARCH.
Prerequisites
GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE, LITERATURE AND CULTURE. STUDENTS MUST HAVE PASSED THE FOURTH-YEAR ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND ENGLISH LITERATURE EXAMS.
Contents
THE COURSE WILL FOCUS ON THE REPRESENTATION OF GENDER AND SEXUALITY IN BRITISH CULTURE AND LITERATURE IN THE LATE-VICTORIAN AND EDWARDIAN PERIOD. AT THE FIN DE SIÈCLE THE RISE OF A NEW SCIENCE, SEXOLOGY, AND THE EMERGENCE OF NEW SOCIAL AND CULTURAL ICONS, SUCH AS THE NEW WOMAN AND THE MALE AESTHETE, REDEFINED THE MEANINGS OF FEMININITY AND MASCULINITY AND TESTIFIED TO A GENERAL QUESTIONING OF TRADITIONAL GENDER BOUNDARIES AND IDENTITIES RESULTING IN CONFLICTING DISCOURSES OF SEXUAL POLITICS. AMONG THE TOPICS DISCUSSED WILL BE:
1) THE WOMAN QUESTION AND “THE NEW WOMAN” (6 HOURS);
2) SEXOLOGY AND THE INVENTION OF SEXUAL TYPES (6 HOURS);
3) MONSTROUS SEXUALITY: SALOME (8 HOURS);
4) DANDIES, MALE AESTHETES, HOMOSEXUALS: FROM WILDE TO FORSTER (10 HOURS).

Teaching Methods
LECTURES. STUDENTS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND CLASSES. THE LANGUAGE OF TUITION WILL BE ENGLISH. STUDENTS WILL BE ENCOURAGED TO GIVE PRESENTATIONS OR WRITE SHORT ESSAYS ON TOPICS OF THEIR OWN CHOICE RELATED TO THE COURSE.
Verification of learning

FINAL ORAL EXAM IN ENGLISH. STUDENTS WILL BE ASKED TO DISCUSS THE PRIMARY TEXTS INCLUDED IN THE READING LIST USING THE CRITICAL MATERIAL RELATED TO THE TEXTS. SHORT ESSAYS WILL BE ASSESSED DURING THE COURSE.
