GENERAL OBJECTIVE: THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE IS THE ACQUISITION OF WRITTEN AND ORAL SKILLS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE CORRESPONDING TO LEVEL B2+ OF THE QCER WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO SPECIFIC FIELDS OF STUDY (HISTORY-LITERATURE-PHILOLOGY) THROUGH THE LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF SPECIALIZED TEXTS. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING (DUBLIN DESCRIPTOR 1 ) THE STUDENT WILL DEVELOP KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION SKILLS REGARDING - THE MOST POPULAR COMPUTER APPLICATIONS FOR DIGITIZING AND ARCHIVING DOCUMENTS BOTH IN THE LITERARY AND CULTURAL HERITAGE FIELDS - SPECIFIC USES OF THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE IN SPECIFIC SOCIOLINGUISTIC CONTEXTS - THE COMMUNICATION OF DIFFERENT GENRES AND FORMATS, INCLUDING THE MOST POPULAR ONES, ALSO THROUGH NEW INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING (DUBLIN DESCRIPTOR 2 ) - THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO - PRODUCE AND UNDERSTAND TEXTS OF DIFFERENT NATURE AND TYPE BY APPLYING THE PRINCIPLES OF LINGUISTIC INQUIRY TO A WIDE VARIETY OF COMMUNICATIVE CONTEXTS, INCLUDING IN FOREIGN LANGUAGES;- PERFORM DATA MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES, INCLUDING IN ELECTRONIC FORMAT, ANALYSIS AND CRITICAL EVALUATION OF THE ISSUES ADDRESSED (DESCRIPTION OF LINGUISTIC STRUCTURES, SEMANTIC-STYLISTIC INTERPRETATION OR ENTIRE AUTHORIAL CORPORA OR INDIVIDUAL WORKS, ETC.);- COMMUNICATE AND ARGUE IN DIFFERENT PROFESSIONAL FIELDS, INCLUDING IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE;- USE THE MOST POPULAR AND COMMON LINGUISTIC UNIT LABELING SYSTEMS AT ALL LEVELS OF ANALYSIS AND THE COMPUTER TOOLS DEDICATED TO THEM; - MANAGE AND QUERY LINGUISTIC DATABASES, ELECTRONIC DICTIONARIES, FREQUENCY LEXICONS, AND DERIVE DATA FROM THEM FOR QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS AND INTERLINGUAL COMPARISONS;- APPLY THE PRINCIPLES OF LINGUISTIC AND SOCIO-LINGUISTIC INQUIRY IN DIFFERENT COMMUNICATIVE CONTEXTS; - IDENTIFY AND UNDERSTAND THE INFORMATION STRUCTURE OF A WRITTEN AND ORAL TEXT; AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT (DUBLIN DESCRIPTOR 3 ) THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO - ANALYSE AND RE-ELABORATE ALL ASPECTS OF LINGUISTIC PRODUCTION, BOTH ORAL AND WRITTEN, OF TEXTS OF A LITERARY NATURE BUT ALSO THOSE OF A TECHNICAL-SPECIALIST NATURE RELATING TO VARIOUS KNOWLEDGE, VARIOUS CONTEXTS AND VARIOUS AREAS OF KNOWLEDGE COMMUNICATION SKILLS (DESCRIPTOR 4 DUBLIN) THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO - COMMUNICATE CLEARLY, THROUGH APPROPRIATE LEXICAL AND GRAMMATICAL CHOICES, THE ESSENTIAL CONTENT OF A SPECIALIZED TEXT. - INTERACT IN SHORT, SIMPLE CONVERSATIONS ON TOPICS OF PERSONAL, SOCIAL, OR PROFESSIONAL INTEREST. LEARNING SKILLS (DUBLIN DESCRIPTOR 5 ) THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - IDENTIFY AND USE THE TOOLS OF ANALYSIS, IN-DEPTH STUDY, AND SCIENTIFIC UPDATING FOR LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY DISCIPLINES - ACCESS SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE PRODUCED IN ENGLISH - USE THE MAIN COMPUTER TOOLS IN THE SPECIFIC AREAS OF COMPETENCE (SKILLS RELATED TO THE NEW LANGUAGES OF COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION). |

THE LEARNING OUTCOMES WILL BE TESTED BY MEANS OF TWO WRITTEN TESTS (GRAMMAR, PHONOLOGY, COMPREHENSION AND ANALYSIS OF A TEXT) AND ORAL TESTS. THE ORAL TEST WILL INCLUDE: 1. LISTENING TO AND COMPREHENSION OF A MONOLOGUE (WITH MULTIPLE-CHOICE EXERCISES, WITH A MARK OF 5/5), 2. LISTENING TO AND COMPREHENSION OF A DIALOGUE (WITH INSERTION EXERCISES, WITH A MARK OF 5/5), 3. SHORT PRESENTATION OF TOPICS (6 MINUTES+QUESTION TIME) ON THEMES CONSISTENT WITH THE COURSE OF STUDY. THE ASSESSMENT OF THIS TEST (IN 20/20 TO BE ADDED TO THE 10/10 OF THE LISTENING TEST) WILL BE MADE ACCORDING TO THE FOLLOWING SCHEME: ASSESSMENT GRID FOR SPEAKING TEST FOR EACH ANALYTICAL CRITERION STUDENTS WILL BE ASSIGNED A MARK RANGING FROM 1 TO 5. A. GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY, B. PRONUNCIATION, C. DISCOURSE MANAGEMENT, D. INTERACTIVE COMMUNICATION. THE WRITTEN TESTS ARE PREREQUISITE FOR THE ORAL TESTS. ATTENDING STUDENTS WILL TAKE TWO PROGRESS TESTS (MID-TERM AND END-OF-COURSE TESTS). ANY FAILED PROGRESS TESTS MAY BE MADE UP AT THE SAME TIME AS THE NEXT INTERCOURSE TEST. NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS WILL SIT ALL WRITTEN AND ORAL EXAMINATIONS ON THE SAME DAY AS SCHEDULED IN THE EXAMINATION TIMETABLE. ACHIEVEMENT OF THE LEARNING OBJECTIVES IS ATTESTED BY PASSING EXAMS WITH AN EVALUATION EXPRESSED BY AN OVERALL MARK IN 30. GRADES BELOW 18 WILL BE EQUIVALENT TO AN UNSATISFACTORY LEARNING EVALUATION. |
