Objectives
THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE IS THE ACQUISITION OF WRITTEN AND ORAL SKILLS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE CORRESPONDING TO LEVEL B2+ OF THE QCER WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO SPECIFIC FIELDS OF STUDY (HISTORY-LITERATURE-PHILOLOGY) THROUGH THE LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF SPECIALISED ELECTRONIC CORPORA.

KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION SKILLS (DESCRIPTOR 1 DUBLIN )
THE STUDENT DEVELOPS KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION SKILLS REGARDING
- THE MOST WIDESPREAD COMPUTER APPLICATIONS FOR DIGITISING AND ARCHIVING DOCUMENTS BOTH IN THE LITERARY AND CULTURAL HERITAGE FIELDS
- THE MAIN METHODOLOGIES AND ADVANCED TECHNIQUES FOR THE COLLECTION, ANALYSIS AND PROCESSING OF LINGUISTIC DATA, WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE PROCESSING OF DATABASES
- THE COMMUNICATION OF DIFFERENT GENRES AND FORMATS, INCLUDING THE MOST WIDESPREAD ONES ALSO THROUGH NEW INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING (DESCRIPTOR 2 DUBLIN) - THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO
- CARRY OUT DATA PROCESSING TASKS, ALSO IN ELECTRONIC FORMATS, ANALYSIS AND CRITICAL EVALUATION OF THE ISSUES ADDRESSED (DESCRIPTION OF LINGUISTIC STRUCTURES, SEMANTIC-STYLISTIC INTERPRETATION OF ENTIRE AUTHORIAL CORPORA OR INDIVIDUAL WORKS, ETC.)
- COMMUNICATE AND DISCUSS IN DIFFERENT PROFESSIONAL CONTEXTS ALSO IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE;
- USE THE MOST WIDESPREAD AND COMMON TAGGING SYSTEMS OF CORPORA AT ALL LEVELS OF ANALYSIS AND THE COMPUTER TOOLS DESIGNED FOR THIS PURPOSE;
- MANAGE AND QUERY ELECTRONIC DICTIONARIES, LINGUISTIC DATABASE, ELECTRONIC LEXICAL FREQUENCY TABLES, AND EXTRACT DATA FOR QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS AND INTER-LINGUISTIC COMPARISONS;
- APPLY THE PRINCIPLES OF LINGUISTIC AND SOCIO-LINGUISTIC INVESTIGATION IN DIFFERENT COMMUNICATIVE CONTEXTS

- ANALYSE AND REFLECT ON ALL ASPECTS OF LINGUISTIC PRODUCTION, BOTH ORAL AND WRITTEN, LITERARY TEXTS AS WELL AS TECHNICAL AND SPECIALISED TEXTS RELATING TO THE VARIOUS AREAS OF KNOWLEDGE, CONTEXTS AND DOMAINS

COMMUNICATION SKILLS (DESCRIPTOR 4 DUBLIN)
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO
- COMMUNICATE CLEARLY, USING APPROPRIATE LEXICAL AND GRAMMATICAL CHOICES, THE MAIN CONTENTS OF A SPECIALISED TEXT.
- INTERACT IN SHORT, SIMPLE CONVERSATIONS ON TOPICS OF PERSONAL, SOCIAL OR PROFESSIONAL INTEREST.

LEARNING SKILLS (DESCRIPTOR 5 DUBLIN)
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- IDENTIFY AND USE THE TOOLS OF ANALYSIS, IN-DEPTH STUDY AND SCIENTIFIC REVISION FOR LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY DISCIPLINES
- ACCESS SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE PUBLISHED IN ENGLISH
- USE THE MAIN IT TOOLS IN THE SPECIFIC AREAS OF COMPETENCE (SKILLS RELATING TO THE NEW LANGUAGES OF COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION).
Prerequisites
-KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN PHONOLOGICAL, MORPHOLOGICAL AND SYNTACTIC FEATURES OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE (CEF LEVEL B2 CORRESPONDING TO THE FOLLOWING DESCRIPTION: [THE SPEAKER] "CAN UNDERSTAND THE MAIN IDEAS OF COMPLEX TEXTS ON BOTH CONCRETE AND ABSTRACT TOPICS, INCLUDING TECHNICAL DISCUSSIONS IN HIS/HER AREA OF SPECIALISATION. CAN PRODUCE CLEAR, DETAILED TEXTS ON A WIDE RANGE OF TOPICS AND EXPRESS AN OPINION ON EITHER CURRENT EVENTS" OR SPECIALISED TOPICS.

MODULE I:
-INFORMATION FLOW WITHIN TEXTS;
-EXPRESSING LOGICAL LINKS: LINKING WORDS; SIMPLE AND COMPOUND SENTENCES.

MODULE II:
-DESIGN AND LINGUISTIC/CULTURAL ANALYSES OF ELECTRONIC CORPORA.
-LISTENING ACTIVITIES BASED ON AUTHENTIC AUDIO/VIDEO MATERIALS.

Verification of learning
LEARNING OUTCOMES WILL BE TESTED THROUGH THREE WRITTEN TESTS ON: 1. GRAMMAR AND PHONOLOGY OF ENGLISH (ASSESSED THROUGH MULTIPLE CHOICE EXERCISES); 2. READING COMPREHENSION AND ANALYSIS OF A SPECIALISED TEXT (ASSESSED THROUGH WH-QUESTIONS). THE ORAL TEST INCLUDES: 1. LISTENING COMPREHENSION OF A MONOLOGUE (ASSESSED THROUGH A MULTIPLE CHOICE EXERCISE, FINAL MARK 5/5), 2. LISTENING COMPREHENSION OF A DIALOGUE (ASSESSED THROUGH A FILLING-THE-GAPS EXERCISE, FINAL MARK: 5/5), 3. ORAL PRESENTATION (INDIVIDUALLY OR IN GROUPS) ON ONE OR MORE TOPICS DISCUSSED DURING THE COURSE (6 MIN.+QUESTION TIME).
ASSESSMENT GRID FOR SPEAKING TEST (20/20): FOR EACH ANALYTICAL CRITERION STUDENTS WILL BE ASSIGNED A MARK RANGING FROM 1 TO 5.
A. GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY, B. PRONUNCIATION, C. DISCOURSE MANAGEMENT, D. INTERACTIVE COMMUNICATION.
THE WRITTEN TESTS ARE PREREQUISITE FOR THE ORAL TESTS.
ATTENDING STUDENTS WILL TAKE THREE PROGRESS TESTS (MID-TERM AND END-OF-COURSE TESTS). ANY FAILED PROGRESS TESTS MAY BE MADE UP AT THE SAME TIME AS THE NEXT INTERCOURSE TEST. NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS WILL SIT ALL WRITTEN AND ORAL EXAMINATIONS ON THE SAME DAY AS SCHEDULED IN THE EXAMINATION TIMETABLE.
ACHIEVEMENT OF THE LEARNING OBJECTIVES IS ATTESTED BY PASSING EXAMS WITH AN EVALUATION EXPRESSED BY AN OVERALL MARK IN 30. GRADES BELOW 18 WILL BE EQUIVALENT TO AN UNSATISFACTORY LEARNING EVALUATION.

IT IS NECESSARY TO PASS THE WRITTEN TESTS IN ORDER TO TAKE THE ORAL TEST AND COMPLETE THE EXAM. PROGRESS TESTS UNDER THE PASSING GRADE OF 18 CAN BE RECOVERED ALONG WITH THE FOLLOWING PROGRESS TEST. LEARNING OBJECTIVES ARE ATTESTED THROUGH A STANDARDISED SCORE OUT OF 30.
