Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO:
- CONSOLIDATE ENGLISH LANGUAGE COMPETENCE BY PROVIDING FURTHER PRACTICE IN THE FOUR SKILLS AND BY GIVING STUDENTS ADDITIONAL TOOLS FOR TEXTUAL ANALYSIS BEFORE FACING THE MAIN ISSUES IN THE TRANSLATION OF LITERARY AND SPECIALIZED TEXTS;
- CONCENTRATE ON PRAGMATIC AND STYLISTIC ASPECTS OF LITERARY, AUDIOVISUAL AND SONG TRANSLATION.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL:
-ACQUIRE A LEVEL OF COMPETENCE CORRESPONDING TO AN INITIAL C2 OF THE COMMON EUROPEAN LANGUAGE FRAMEWORK;
-LEARN HOW TO REFLECT ON THE STYLISTIC AND PRAGMATIC FEATURES AND THE TRANSLATION STRATEGIES IN ENGLISH-ITALIAN LITERARY AND AUDIOVISUAL TRANSLATIONS;
-LEARN HOW TO ANALYSE ENGLISH THROUGH THE STUDY OF LINGUISTICS TO FACE THE MAIN PROBLEMATIC ASPECTS OF THE TRANSLATION OF DIFFERENT TEXT TYPES AND GENRES.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
-IDENTIFY THE PRAGMASTYLISTIC ASPECTS OF A TEXT IN ORDER TO OBTAIN EFFECTIVE AND APPROPRIATE TRANSLATIONS;
-MASTER THE LANGUAGE IN EVERYDAY, PROFESSIONAL AND ACADEMIC CONTEXTS;
-WORK AS TRANSLATORS IN PROFESSIONAL DOMAINS SUCH AS PUBLISHING AND AUDIOVISUAL INDUSTRY (DUBBING AND SUBTITLING);
-ANALYSE AND TRANSLATE LITERARY AS WELL AS TECHNICAL AND SPECIALISED TEXTS, SPECIFICALLY RELATED TO SOME PRECISE CONTEXTS OF USE SUCH AS AUDIOVISUAL PRODUCTS AND SONGS ADAPTATIONS;

MAKING JUDGEMENTS
STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
-IMPROVE THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND USE OF LINGUISTICALLY COMPLEX STRUCTURES AND TEXTS (WITH A VARIETY OF STYLES AND REGISTERS BELONGING TO LITERARY AND NON LITERARY SOURCES);
-ENHANCE THEIR ABILITIES IN CRITICALLY READING AND ANALYZING TEXTS BEFORE TRANSLATING THEM.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
-EFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATE IN ENGLISH AT AN EARLY C1 PROFICIENCY LEVEL.

LEARNING SKILLS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
- SELECT AND USE THE MAIN TOOLS OF ANALYSIS AND TRANSLATION STRATEGIES, WITH SPECIFIC REFERENCE TO PRAGMATIC AND STYLISTIC ASPECTS;
- IDENTIFY STYLISTIC FUNCTIONS AND FEATURES OF SOURCE TEXTS AND OFFER SOLUTIONS TO THEIR TRANSFER INTO THE TARGET LANGUAGE ALSO CRITICALLY COMMENTING ON THE EXISTING OFFICIAL TRANSLATIONS.
- CRITICALLY ACCESS AND USE BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS AND DIGITAL RESOURCES;
- USE THE TECHNOLOGICAL TOOLS AVAILABLE IN THE FIELD OF AUDIOVISUAL TRANSLATION (DUBBING AND SUBTITLING SOFTWARE).

Prerequisites
PARTICIPATION IN THE COURSE IS PERMITTED ONLY FOR STUDENTS WHO HAVE AT LEAST A C1 LEVEL OF ENGLISH PROFICIENCY, ACCORDING TO THE COMMON EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE FOR LANGUAGES (CEFR).
STUDENTS MUST ALSO HAVE PASSED ENGLISH LANGUAGE I, II, AND III EXAMS DURING THEIR UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAM.

Contents
DURING THE COURSE, STUDENTS WILL STRENGTHEN THEIR SKILLS IN LINGUISTIC, RHETORICAL, AND STYLISTIC ANALYSIS OF BOTH WRITTEN AND SPOKEN TEXTS. SIGNIFICANT ATTENTION WILL BE DEVOTED TO THE CHALLENGES OF REFORMULATION IN ITS VARIOUS FORMS AND FOR DIFFERENT PURPOSES, THROUGH A GENRE-BASED APPROACH.
IN PARTICULAR, STUDENTS WILL BE INTRODUCED TO KEY THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS FROM MAJOR TRANSLATION STUDIES. ALONGSIDE THEORETICAL ISSUES, STUDENTS WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PRACTICE IN CLASS, WORKING ON TEXTS FROM LITERARY, MUSICAL, AND TECHNICAL GENRES.
DURING THE LANGUAGE PRACTICE SESSIONS, PRIORITY WILL BE GIVEN TO PROFESSIONAL CONTEXTS IN WHICH STUDENTS MAY EVENTUALLY PURSUE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES.
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF AN ANNUAL MODULE OF 45 HOURS TAUGHT BY THE OFFICIAL COURSE PROFESSOR, ALONG WITH A YEAR-LONG CYCLE OF ASSISTED STUDY ACTIVITIES IN THE CLASSROOM OR LAB, FOCUSED ON COMMUNICATIVE PURPOSES, CONDUCTED BY A NATIVE ENGLISH-SPEAKING LANGUAGE ASSISTANT (CEL – COLLABORATORE ED ESPERTO LINGUISTICO).
COURSE UNITS:
•PRAGMATIC AND STYLISTIC ASPECTS OF TRANSLATION – 9 HOURS
•LITERARY TRANSLATION – 10 HOURS
•AUDIOVISUAL TRANSLATION – 6 HOURS
•HUMOUR AND CULTURAL ASPECTS IN TRANSLATION – 6 HOURS
•SONG TRANSLATION – 4 HOURS
•SPECIALIZED TRANSLATION – 4 HOURS
•IN-CLASS TASK PRESENTATIONS – 6 HOURS
ATTENDING STUDENTS WILL BE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE SEVERAL MANDATORY ASSIGNMENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR (INCLUDING A THEORETICAL TASK, A DUBBING TASK, AND A SONG TRANSLATION TASK).
BEFORE THE ORAL EXAM, ALL STUDENTS MUST SUBMIT A FINAL PROJECT, CONSISTING OF THE TRANSLATION OF A CHOSEN TEXT AND A CORRESPONDING ANALYTICAL COMMENTARY.

Teaching Methods
THEORETICAL LECTURES, IN-CLASS EXERCISES ON TEXTUAL ANALYSIS AND TRANSLATION, INDEPENDENT WORK TO BE COMPLETED AT HOME AND DISCUSSED IN CLASS, PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES IN CLASS OR IN THE LANGUAGE LAB WITH NATIVE-SPEAKER LANGUAGE EXPERTS, AND SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING.
TEACHING APPROACHES USED: TASK-BASED LEARNING, PROJECT-BASED LEARNING, AND LEARNING BY DOING.
Verification of learning
THE EXAM (PART WITH THE OFFICIAL PROFESSOR) CONSISTS OF:

-A WRITTEN TEST (TRANSLATION AND ANALYSIS OF A TEXT CHOSEN BY THE STUDENT), TO BE COMPLETED INDEPENDENTLY AND SUBMITTED TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE ORAL EXAM (FOR ALL STUDENTS), AND A TRANSLATION TEST DURING THE ORAL EXAM SESSIONS (FOR NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS);

-AN ORAL EXAM DURING WHICH THE TASKS COMPLETED DURING THE YEAR AND THE FINAL PROJECT CARRIED OUT AT HOME WILL BE DISCUSSED (FOR ATTENDING STUDENTS).

NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS WILL PRESENT THE FINAL PROJECT, TRANSLATE A SHORT TEXT DURING THE ORAL EXAM, AND STUDY THE THEORETICAL MATERIALS PROVIDED BY THE PROFESSOR.

THE GENERAL WRITTEN TEST (LANGUAGE COMPONENT), LASTING 90 MINUTES, WILL BE BASED ON THE CONTENTS OF THE REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS AND THE PROFICIENCY LEVEL ESTABLISHED AS THE COURSE OBJECTIVE. IT WILL CONSIST OF:

-A GRAMMAR AND READING COMPREHENSION SECTION – 45 MINUTES

-A WRITING/COMPOSITION (ARTICLE) SECTION – 45 MINUTES.

THE WRITTEN EXAM IS HELD THREE TIMES DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR (SUMMER, AUTUMN, AND WINTER SESSIONS), IS PREPARATORY TO THE ORAL EXAM, AND IS VALID, FOR ALL SESSIONS, FOR TWO ACADEMIC YEARS.
ATTENDING STUDENTS MAY TAKE THE COMPOSITION SECTION AT THE END OF THE COURSE. STUDENTS WHO PASS THE TEST MAY CHOOSE TO ACCEPT THE GRADE FOR THAT PART AND KEEP IT FOR TWO YEARS, OR REJECT IT AND RETAKE IT ON THE DAY OF THE WRITTEN EXAM.
EVEN STUDENTS WHO TAKE THE IN-COURSE WRITING TEST MUST SIT FOR THE WRITTEN EXAM (WHICH WOULD ONLY INCLUDE GRAMMAR/USE OF ENGLISH AND READING COMPREHENSION) ON THE OFFICIAL DATE.
THE PUBLISHED GRADE WILL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT ALL THREE COMPONENTS: WRITING (IN-COURSE OR OFFICIAL) + GRAMMAR/USE OF ENGLISH + READING COMPREHENSION.

ATTENDING STUDENTS WHO CHOOSE TO TAKE THE COMPOSITION ON THE DAY OF THE WRITTEN EXAM CANCEL THE IN-COURSE TEST PREVIOUSLY TAKEN. IF THEY DO NOT PASS THE FULL WRITTEN EXAM, THEY CAN NO LONGER REFER TO THE TEST TAKEN DURING THE COURSE.
THE IN-COURSE COMPOSITION TEST TAKEN BY ATTENDING STUDENTS HAS THE SAME VALIDITY AS THE OFFICIAL WRITTEN EXAM (TWO ACADEMIC YEARS, UP TO THE MAY ORAL PRE-SESSION OF THE SECOND YEAR OF VALIDITY).

THE ORAL EXAM IS DIVIDED INTO THREE PARTS:

-A LISTENING TEST IN THE LAB TO ASSESS ORAL COMPREHENSION;

-A CONVERSATION IN ENGLISH ON ONE OF THE TOPICS COVERED DURING THE ASSISTED STUDY ACTIVITIES;

-A FINAL EXAM WITH THE PROFESSOR, WHICH WILL CONSIST OF A DISCUSSION ON SOME OF THE TOPICS ADDRESSED IN THE PROFESSOR’S MODULE AND ON THE TRANSLATION AND ANALYSIS PROJECT COMPLETED AT HOME.

IT IS ALSO SPECIFIED THAT IN-COURSE TESTS ARE RESERVED EXCLUSIVELY FOR ATTENDING STUDENTS.

N.B. TO BE CONSIDERED AN ATTENDING STUDENT, ONE MUST ATTEND AT LEAST 80% OF THE LESSONS.
