Objectives
GENERAL OBJECTIVE
THE COURSE AIMS TO TRAIN STUDENTS TO READ LITERARY AND NON-LITERARY TEXTS IN ORDER TO GRASP RELEVANT INFORMATION, TO UNDERSTAND AND PRODUCE TEXTS THROUGH IN-DEPTH STUDY OF MORPHOSYNTAX, SEMANTICS, AND STYLISTICS, AS WELL AS TO ENHANCE WRITTEN AND ORAL COMMUNICATION SKILLS BY INTRODUCING TECHNIQUES RELATED TO TEXTUAL ANALYSIS AND MULTIMODALITY.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL:
-LEARN TO USE THE MAIN LANGUAGE LEARNING TOOLS (SUCH AS DICTIONARIES, GRAMMARS, AND MULTIMEDIA LEARNING RESOURCES);
-ACQUIRE PROFICIENCY IN WRITTEN AND SPOKEN ENGLISH WITH THE GOAL OF REACHING AN INITIAL C1 LEVEL ACCORDING TO THE COMMON EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE FOR LANGUAGES (CEFR);
-LEARN TO ENGAGE IN METALINGUISTIC REFLECTION ON THE LINGUISTIC FEATURES AND STRUCTURES OF ENGLISH AT AN INITIAL C1 LEVEL;
-LEARN TO ANALYZE WRITTEN AND SPOKEN LANGUAGE USING TOOLS FROM TEXTUAL LINGUISTICS AND STYLISTICS.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
-COMMUNICATE IN EVERYDAY SITUATIONS, READ AND UNDERSTAND COMPLEX TEXTS AND THEIR IMPLICIT MEANINGS;
-PROCESS INFORMATION APPROPRIATELY AND ARGUE EFFECTIVELY IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE;
-EXPRESS THEMSELVES FLUENTLY AND SPONTANEOUSLY, USING LANGUAGE FLEXIBLY AND EFFECTIVELY FOR ACADEMIC AND SOCIAL PURPOSES;
-PRODUCE CLEAR, WELL-STRUCTURED, AND DETAILED TEXTS ON COMPLEX TOPICS, DEMONSTRATING MASTERY OF DISCOURSE STRUCTURES, CONNECTIONS, AND MECHANISMS OF COHESION AND COHERENCE.

INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
-FORMULATE HYPOTHESES INDEPENDENTLY AND ENGAGE IN ARGUMENTATION, COMPARISON, AND EVALUATION OF LINGUISTIC TEXTS;
-HIGHLIGHT THE LINGUISTIC AND STYLISTIC FEATURES OF TEXTS FROM DIFFERENT GENRES, DEMONSTRATING TEXTUAL COMPETENCE;
-PRODUCE EFFECTIVE TEXTUAL ANALYSES, PARTICULARLY OF LITERARY AND MULTIMODAL TEXTS;
-UNDERSTAND THE MECHANISMS OF CREATIVE WRITING AND PRODUCE CREATIVE TEXTS THROUGH INTERSEMIOTIC TRANSLATION (E.G., FROM PAINTING TO STORY – FROM POETRY TO VIDEO).

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
-COMMUNICATE IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE;
-INTERACT APPROPRIATELY IN VARIOUS SOCIO-CULTURAL CONTEXTS, ADAPTING TO THEIR OBJECTIVES AND AUDIENCE;
-PRESENT AND COMMUNICATE THEIR RESEARCH FINDINGS OR ORIGINAL WORK THROUGH WRITTEN TEXTS OR DIGITAL TOOLS.

LEARNING SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
-USE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS AND DIGITAL RESOURCES FOR ANALYSIS;
-UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET NON-VERBAL LANGUAGE AND CONVERT IT INTO VERBAL LANGUAGE AND VICE VERSA — FROM IMAGES TO WORDS AND FROM WORDS TO IMAGES;
-CONTINUOUSLY UPDATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE USING RELEVANT SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE.


Prerequisites
STUDENTS MUST HAVE PASSED THE FOLLOWING EXAMS: ENGLISH LANGUAGE I AND ENGLISH LITERATURE I AND MUST POSSESS A LEVEL OF LINGUISTIC COMPETENCE CORRESPONDING TO B1/B2 OF THE COMMON EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE FOR LANGUAGES.

Contents
STUDENTS WILL BE INTRODUCED TO LINGUISTIC AND STYLISTIC ANALYSIS AND CREATIVE WRITING THROUGH THEORETICAL REFLECTIONS AND PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES ON TEXTS OF DIFFERENT GENRES. THE TEXTUAL GENRES UNDER ANALYSIS BELONG TO THE LITERARY, FILM/TELEVISION, JOURNALISTIC, AND ADVERTISING DOMAINS.
IN THE FIRST SEMESTER, THE LESSONS WILL FOCUS ON TEXTUAL GENRES, STYLISTICS, INTERSEMIOTIC TRANSLATION, AND CREATIVE WRITING. THE FINAL WORK OF THIS MODULE INVOLVES WRITING A STORY BASED ON A PAINTING.
IN THE SECOND SEMESTER, THE LESSONS WILL REVOLVE AROUND LINGUISTIC AND STYLISTIC ANALYSIS OF LITERARY TEXTS AND THEIR INTERSEMIOTIC TRANSLATION. STUDENTS WILL CHOOSE A LITERARY TEXT AND ADAPT IT INTO A SUBJECT AND SCREENPLAY. OTHER LESSONS WILL BE DEDICATED TO AUDIOVISUAL TRANSLATION, JOURNALISTIC LANGUAGE, AND ADVERTISING LANGUAGE.
SOME LESSONS WILL BE LED BY EXPERTS WHO WILL ASSIST STUDENTS IN THE REALIZATION OF THEIR PROJECTS.

THE OFFICIAL INSTRUCTOR'S LESSONS WILL BE SUPPLEMENTED BY ASSISTED STUDY ACTIVITIES IN THE CLASSROOM OR IN THE LABORATORY WITH COLLABORATORS AND LINGUISTIC EXPERTS (CEL) WHOSE NATIVE LANGUAGE IS ENGLISH.

THE COURSE RUNS ANNUALLY (OCTOBER-MAY).
Teaching Methods
THEORETICAL LECTURES;
PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES IN CLASS OR IN THE LANGUAGE LAB WITH NATIVE-SPEAKER LANGUAGE EXPERTS;
SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING;
TASKS ASSIGNED DURING THE COURSE AND DISCUSSED/PRESENTED IN CLASS.
THE TEACHING METHODS USED INCLUDE TASK-BASED LEARNING, PROJECT-BASED LEARNING, AND LEARNING BY DOING.

ATTENDANCE IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
GIVEN THE NATURE OF THE COURSE, WHICH INCLUDES PRACTICAL CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES, NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS WILL FOLLOW A DIFFERENT SYLLABUS AND MUST ARRANGE IT WITH THE PROFESSOR DURING OFFICE HOURS.
Verification of learning
THE EXAM CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN TEST AND AN ORAL TEST. FOR ATTENDING STUDENTS, MID-TERM TESTS ARE PLANNED TO REPLACE PARTS OF THE FINAL EXAM. A POSITIVE RESULT IN THE WRITTEN TEST IS MANDATORY TO ACCESS THE ORAL TEST.
THE WRITTEN TEST CONSISTS OF A GRAMMAR/USE OF ENGLISH SECTION, A READING COMPREHENSION (45 MINUTES), AND A COMPOSITION (45 MINUTES). IT TAKES PLACE THREE TIMES DURING AN ACADEMIC YEAR (SUMMER SESSION, AUTUMN SESSION, WINTER SESSION), IT IS A PREREQUISITE FOR THE ORAL EXAM, AND IS VALID FOR TWO ACADEMIC YEARS FOR ALL SESSIONS.
ATTENDING STUDENTS CAN TAKE THE COMPOSITION PART AT THE END OF THE COURSE. STUDENTS WHO PASS THE TEST HAVE THE OPTION TO ACCEPT THE SCORE FOR THAT PART AND KEEP IT FOR TWO YEARS OR REJECT IT AND RETAKE IT ON THE DAY OF THE WRITTEN EXAM. THOSE WHO TAKE THE MID-TERM WRITING TEST MUST ALSO TAKE THE OFFICIAL WRITTEN TEST (WHICH INCLUDES ONLY GRAMMAR/USE OF ENGLISH AND READING COMPREHENSION) ON THE OFFICIAL DATE. THE PUBLISHED SCORE WILL BE THE TOTAL SCORE CONSIDERING THE THREE DIFFERENT PARTS: WRITING (MID-TERM OR OFFICIAL) + GRAMMAR/USE OF ENGLISH – READING COMPREHENSION.

ATTENDING STUDENTS WHO CHOOSE TO TAKE THE COMPOSITION ON THE DAY OF THE WRITTEN EXAM CANCEL THE MID-TERM TEST ALREADY TAKEN AND, IF THEY FAIL TO PASS THE WRITTEN TEST IN ITS ENTIRETY, CANNOT REFER TO THE TEST TAKEN DURING THE COURSE ANYMORE. ANY COMPOSITION TEST TAKEN BY ATTENDING STUDENTS DURING THE COURSE HAS THE SAME VALIDITY AS THE WRITTEN TEST (2 ACADEMIC YEARS).

THE ORAL TEST CONSISTS OF THREE PARTS: A LISTENING TEST IN THE LABORATORY; AN ENGLISH CONVERSATION ON ONE OF THE TOPICS COVERED DURING ASSISTED STUDY ACTIVITIES, AND A FINAL EXAM ALWAYS IN ENGLISH (WHICH CAN BE TAKEN ONLY IF THE LISTENING AND CONVERSATION TESTS ARE PASSED), CONSISTING OF AN INTERVIEW ON SOME OF THE TOPICS COVERED IN THE MODULE TAUGHT BY THE INSTRUCTOR. ATTENDING STUDENTS WILL BE ASKED TO WRITE A STORY AND A SCREENPLAY.

PLEASE NOTE: STUDENTS WHO ATTEND AT LEAST 80% OF THE CLASSES ARE CONSIDERED 'ATTENDING STUDENTS'.

NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS ARE ASKED TO CONTACT THE PROFESSOR FOR INFORMATION ON THE PROGRAM.
