THE COURSE AIMS TO: - FAMILIARIZE STUDENTS WITH THE MAIN LITERARY AND CULTURAL PHENOMENA OF GREAT BRITAIN IN THE XVIII AND XIX CENTURIES WITH SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON THE NOVEL; - PROVIDE THE BASIC METHODOLOGICAL TOOLS NECESSARY FOR TEXT ANALYSIS. KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION SKILLS THE STUDENT: -WILL KNOW THE CULTURAL CONTEXT OF THE CENTURIES UNDER STUDY; -WILL KNOW THE LITERARY WORKS PART OF THE PROGRAM; -WILL UNDERSTAND THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN TEXTS AND THE CONTEXT THAT PRODUCED THEM; -WILL KNOW THE FUNDAMENTALS OF NARRATOLOGICAL AND TEXTUAL ANALYSIS. ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - CONTEXTUALIZE THE LITERARY TEXT AND CONNECT IT TO OTHER TEXTS FROM THE SAME CULTURAL FIELD; - ANALYZE THE TEXT FROM A FORMAL AND STYLISTIC POINT OF VIEW; - SKETCH A COHERENT PICTURE OF THE LITERARY AND CULTURAL PRODUCTION OF THE PERIOD UNDER CONSIDERATION. - ARTICULATE A DISCOURSE ON THE CONTENTS OF THE COURSE BY EMPLOYING THE VOCABULARY OF THE DISCIPLINE IN ITALIAN AND, PARTIALLY, IN ENGLISH. AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: -FORMULATE AUTONOMOUS INTERPRETATIVE HYPOTHESES ABOUT THE LITERARY TEXT; -POSE IT IN COMPARISON WITH OTHER TEXTS; -SELECT AND MEMORIZE RELEVANT INFORMATION. COMMUNICATION SKILLS THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - COMMUNICATE IN ITALIAN AND PARTIALLY IN ENGLISH THE ACQUIRED NOTIONS AND THE RESULTS OF OWN ELABORATIONS. LEARNING SKILLS THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: -UPDATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE, USING TECHNICAL AND SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE SUGGESTED BY THE LECTURER; -FIND TRADITIONAL OR ONLINE BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS TO CONDUCT FURTHER RESEARCH ON KNOWN CONTEXTS. |

THE COURSE AIMS TO STUDY THE NOVEL AS THE MOST SIGNIFICATIVE EXPRESSION OF ENGLISH LITERARY CULTURE IN THE 18TH AND 19TH CENTURIES. AFTER DISCUSSING ITS RISE AND ITS RELATION TO INDIVIDUALISM, THE COURSE WILL FOCUS ON THE EVOLUTION OF THE GENRE IN THE VICTORIAN AGE. PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO THE MULTIPLICITY OF FORMS AND LITERARY CONVENTIONS CHARACTERIZING VICTORIAN NARRATIVE FICTION, WHICH TURNS OUT TO BE A PRIVILEGED VEHICLE OF HISTORICAL, SOCIAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION. D. DEFOE’S MOLL FLANDERS (1722), CH. DICKENS’S HARD TIMES (1854) AND O. WILDE’S THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY (1891) WILL BE READ AND ANALYZED IN ORDER TO RECONSTRUCT THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE NOVEL. -BRIEF HISTORICAL OUTLINE (8 H) -THE HISTORY OF THE NOVEL (10 H) -MOLL FLANDERS AND THE ORIGIN OF THE GENRE (12 H) -HARD TIMES AND THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION (12 H) -THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY AND THE AESTHETIC TURN (12 H) |
